There were long searches around Sunnydale. Buffy was missing and had been missing for the past six months. The scooby-gang believed she had been either kidnapped or killed, but noone had come to replace her, which had to mean that she was alive somewhere, but where..?
In Los Angeles, Angel were searching. He went out to look for her, like he had every single day for the past six months. There hadn't been any clues. Just a big mystery. He went towards the Santa Monica pier and from there he headed for the nearest park. From there he went up and down the alleys looking among the homeless, he didn't know why, he just went looking. He felt really sorry for the people lying on the bare ground with tin plates over them. Most of them were sleeping.
He walked further down the alley and then he saw a person lying, lifeless or incognitos on the ground. He walked toward the person. He saw a little bit of blond hair on the head. When he came closer it was more like a bundle. He stroked the hair away, so he could take a look at the face. He felt a bruise and he gently lifted the head. It felt a little cold, but warm enough to reassure him that whoever this person was, he or she was alive. He brushed the rest of the hair away and looked at the face. Then he saw it, it was Buffy he held in his hands.
She was heavily bruised, but not starved. He picked her up gently up and carried her home to his apartment. Outside the building he saw Cordelia walking out the door.
- Cordelia?
- Going to lunch, boss, she said without turning towards him.
- Cordelia, he said again, firmly.
Cordelia turned towards him and gasped, when she saw what he had brought.
- Oh my God, she exclaimed. - Where did you find her?
- Down the street, she's not awake, but she's alive. I think she needs a doctor. Can you get the car keys?
- Sure, I'll be right back.
- Thanks, Cor.
- Anything.
He walked towards the car and he felt Buffy moving. Her eyes opened a little and she looked right at him. She tried to speak, but she was to weak to form a single word. He kissed her on the forehead.
- It's gonna be all right. You're gonna be all right.
- ... Angel.., she stuttered so low that he could barely hear her.
- I'm here, shh, baby. I'm here.
She didn't utter a single word. She smiled with her eyes, getting him to know that she felt perfectly safe there in his arms. He laid her down on the panzer of the car, but making sure that she wasn't uncomfterble. He had no longer any vampire strength. He was human now.
That afternoon he had woken up with a heart beat. He didn't know how or why. So he had gone straight to the oracles to ask them to turn him back, again. He was no use to find Buffy as a human, he meant. It was like a deja vu, but with the exception that this time, they refused to turn him back. He was to stay human.
Cordelia came running out with the car keys in her hand.
- Get into the back and I'll drive.
There was no time to argue with her. Buffy needed a doctor. He had noticed that she was bleeding from the pelvic area and the colour in her face was slowly disappearing. He took of his jacket and ripped off a piece of his shirt and tried to stop the bleeding, while Cordelia drove towards the hospital.
At the hospital, he picked her up and ran inside.
- A doctor, please.
- Oh my god, a nurse exclaimed. - What happened?
- I don't know. She's been missing for the past six months and I found her about half an hour ago, lying incognitos in a street. I don't know anything about medicine, but I can tell she needs a doctor.
- I'm a doctor, what happened?
- I don't know, but she's bleeding and I need you to stop it.
- Ok, nurse? A bed, get this girl into the ER immediately.
- Ok, doctor. Right away.
- Sir? Can you follow me, an other nurse said. Angel did. - I need you to fill out some forms. The doctor is doing his best. Are you a relative?
- No, a friend... she and I were involved a while ago.
- Can you give me name and phone numbers to her relatives?
Angel gave the nurse the name and numbers. And he filled out the requested forms and the nurse followed him to the waiting room. Half an hour later a nurse approached him.
- We got in touch with her mother, but we can't reach the father. Do you have any other numbers?
- No, I'm sorry. I actually only know the mother and I got the fathers number through her, in case I found something and I couldn't reach her.
- Well, thank you, sir. I think we'll try again.
Angel was about to sit down and wait, when he saw the doctor approaching him.
- Where's the baby?
- What baby?
- This girl has just delivered a baby. The reason she was still bleeding was that a part of the placenta still was in there.
- I think you've rotten something wrong. I saw no baby there. And besides, if she had been pregnant, her friends and family would have known. And they didn't mention anything to me.
- Excuse me, sir. I'm a well educated doctor and I know when a girl has delivered a baby, and that's exactly what this girl has.
- Well, I didn't see or hear a baby near her where I found her.
- Are you sure?
- I'm positive. How is she doing?
- She's asleep. You can see her now.
- Thank you.
Angel walked towards the room the doctor pointed at. Inside it, he could see Buffy lying asleep in the bed, looking so helpless and fragile. He sat down beside the bed and watched her sleep. For two whole hours he sat and just watched her sleep. He wondered where she had been and if what the doctor said was true, if she just had a baby. In that case, who was the father? Was it the guy he had seen her with when he was in Sunnydale? But, if it wasn't him, who else? It had to be him. Buffy had done what he had told her to do, but then was it really a good relationship, since she threw that aside that day he was human?
Then her mother came. Crying of both joy and sadness, joy because Buffy was back and sadness because she was in hospital. She looked at Angel.
- Where did you find her?
- Lying incognitos in a back alley.
- Oh my God. How was she like?
- Bruised like she's now and bleeding.
- Where?
- The pelvic area.
- Oh my God, what did the doctor say?
- The doctor told me that she had just delivered a baby and asked me where the baby was.
- A baby?
- You didn't know she was pregnant?
- No, but she can't, she would have told me.
- ...Mom...?
Joyce and Angel turned around and looked at Buffy, who had woken up. She looked confused.
- Where am I?
- In a hospital, Angel said.
- ...Angel...?
- Yes baby, I'm here.
- What day is this?
- August 25th.
- How did all that time pass so quickly?
- What do you mean? What's the last thing you can remember?
- I was patrolling and something grabbed me, and... and then I don't remember anything.
- You mean, you passed out?
- No, no blackout, but I don't remember anything.
- Buffy, honey? Were you pregnant, Joyce asked her daughter.
- Mom, what gave you that idea? No. That's impossible, who would be the father?
- I don't know, Riley, perhaps?
- Mom, Riley? He and I never had that type of relationship.
- Are you sure?
- Positive. But, why do you ask me now?
- Because, the doctor informed us that you've just delivered a baby, but that has to be before Angel found you.
- Mom, what do you mean? I can't remember having a baby... In fact, I can't remember anything after the ambush in the cemetery.., but how could the doctor think that I've had a baby?
- He found a piece of the placenta, Angel said.
- Oh my God.., Buffy whispered. - But, then... who's the father?
- You don't know?
- There hasn't been anyone for a... year...
- So there has been someone, Joyce stated.
- Yes, a mistake a year ago, but he can't be...
- If you slept with him, he can.
- Mom... we were careful and I had my period after. He can't be...
- ...but then, who?
- I don't know...
Angel started thinking back, nine months. When was that? It was late November... thanksgiving. Could it be? Was the powers that be behind this? Was it his, this baby, they didn't know where was? It was just too much.
A week later and they hadn't gotten any further, the hospital asked them if they wanted the police to go through the case, but Buffy refused, Angel agreed, because it was obvious that they were dealing with the supernatural, so they made an excuse and left. They were sitting at the Summers residence.
- I have an idea, Willow exclaimed.
- What is it, Buffy asked.
- It's a spell that can help you remember things that someone had forcefully made you forget.
- And she'll remember everything, Angel asked quickly, a little worried.
- Every single thing, you know, if I get it all right.
- I wanna try, Buffy said.
- Well, I need a few ingredients, so I'll go down at the magic shop, see you guys later.
- Ok.
Angel thought a lot about it, it was possible that Buffy could remember that day and she'd be mad at him. He wondered if he should let her remember or if he should spare her the pain and let her continue not remembering.
An hour later, Willow was back and she was preparing for the spell. Angel knocked on the door to the room she was in.
- Yeah, she answered.
- It's Angel, can I come in?
- Sure.
Angel walked in the door and sat down on the couch.
- Do you want anything?
- Yeah, I wondered if you could leave some days out of your spell. Can you do that?
- I theory, I can, but why?
- I want you to exclude thanksgiving from it.
- Why don't you want her to remember that?
- Something happened then and it will only cause her pain to make her remember.
- Cause her pain?
- Yeah, it's painful just for me to remember and I don't want her to go through the same thing.
- Ok, I'll do that.
And with that he left the room.
Willow did the spell with that thought in her mind. What was so painful, that he didn't want her to remember. She finished the last chanting. They all sat in silence and waited for an reaction. Buffy sat very quiet. They all noticed that something happened, when she got a flash before her eyes. After it was done, she sat all quiet thinking, looking confused. She looked up at Angel.
- I felt your heart beat, she said quietly.
- Angel looked at her quietly, not knowing what to say.
- Buffy, what are you talking about, Xander asked. - Angel is a vampire, remember?
- I remember kissing you in the daylight, I remember the apartment, everything we did. You took back that day... you're the father... you're the father of my baby... our baby...
- I didn't want you to feel that pain in remembering, he said quietly, looking down.
- What the hell is going on, Xander asked. - Have you forgot the dead-boy thing? And if you guys had done anything, he would go grr...
- It's true what she said, he said quietly. - When she came to LA, we faced a Mohra demon, which regenerated me, when our blood got mixed, I became human...
Everybody sat quietly listening to the whole story. After he was done, he looked at them all. Buffy had tears in her eyes, but she sat all quiet. Angel looked at everyone, who understood and quickly made an exit. Angel went over and laid his arm around her. She accepted it. He pulled her close to him.
- What hurts is that you let me forget and even tried to make me continue not remembering.
- You had already to much on your mind. I was planning to tell you when we get back our baby.
- Our baby, she whispered. - I don't even know if it's a boy or a girl...
- You can't help it, he said, trying to calm her down.
- But I'm the mother, I'm supposed to know. I hate being a slayer more than anything right now...
- It's not your fault, it's mine. I shouldn't have let you go away nine months ago. I shouldn't have asked them to turn me back. Now I know why I became human again. Because I was supposed to be her for you and our son or daughter.
- I don't argue with that. I'm still mad at you for turning back that day.
- I know, I'm mad at me too, but we're gonna manage this. Willow's gonna do the spell again, you're gonna remember, we're gonna find those who took our baby and we're gonna get him or her back.
She leaned towards him, just feeling his presence.
- You promise?
- I promise, we're not gonna let anyone hurt our child.
- I love you, she whispered.
- I love you, too, he whispered back and kissed her on the forehead. - We'll try again tomorrow.
Angel helped her up and walked her home. He didn't remove his arm around her. They reached her house and he was about to say good-bye to her.
- Please don't go, she begged.
- I shouldn't stay, he whispered.
- Please, I don't wanna be alone. Please Angel, don't walk away from me. I can't loose you, too.
He held around her and opened the door. She walked in but held his hand and made sure he entered too.
- Don't worry, I won't leave you. Go and take a nice warm shower and I'll wait, right here.
- Promise me, you won't leave?
- I won't. Don't worry. Go and have a shower, it'll do you good. I'll wait right here.
She held tightly around him.
- Don't ever leave me again. I can't take you leaving me again.
- I already told you. I won't leave. I know I did before and that might make you feel that I'll do it again, but that isn't the case. If that idiot of a Mohra demon hadn't said that you would die by me being human, I wouldn't have turned back time. I only did it so you could live, but now I'm human again and this time I can't and I won't reverse it. And it's not just because of the baby.
He looked straight into her eyes and stroke her face.
- The last six months has made me realise how I can't live without you. You're everything. Nine months ago, I could have been selfish and stayed human, but that had meant risking your life and that's not love. Love is giving anything for you. I would and I did and I will. I won't leave you again, never. I love you.
- Thank you, for saying that, for being you.
He bent foreward and kissed her.
- Go now, take a shower. I'll wait.
She went slowly up the stairs and he went into the living room. Half-an-hour later she came back down, wearing her silk pyjamas. Her hair was still wet, but neither one of them cared. She walked over and sat down, close to him in the sofa. He pulled her close to him. She lay her head on his chest, he lay his arms around her, his hand playing with her hair. They fell asleep like that.
Joyce came home finding them like that. She hadn't seen her daughter so peaceful for ages. She had been tossing and turning, sometimes crying in her sleep, but she never remembered the dream when she woke up. And then there was the sickness pattern, but neither one of them thought it was necessary to go to a doctor, and after a while it went away. They never thought about it again. Neither one of them even though about the little putting on weight before she disappeared.
Joyce wished that she had seen what good influence Angel really had on her. Nobody had ever made her sleep so peacefully in such a bad why? Why keeping the slayer, that could kill them alive for a human baby? It didn't make sense. Time flew by and it got closer and closer to the birth. She had several times tried to escape, but the shield kept her away.
Then the day for the delivery, came. She felt a sharp pain, like something was ripping her insides out. It was the worst cramps ever. The demons noticed it and sat there patiently, waiting. The cramps got closer and closer, until she knew she had to push. And after a long time, the baby was out. It was a girl, then she saw the demons approach. She screamed no, but it became dark, the next she knows she's looking into Angels eyes...
Her mind returned to the present. Everybody looked at her, patiently. She broke down and cried. Angel hurried to her and placed his arms around her.
- Shh, it's alright, he whispered. - It's gonna be alright.
- We have a daughter, she whispered, with tears in her eyes.
- What happened, he asked. - Who has her?
- A Mohra demon, several. They captured me, after I'd fought for my life, but they didn't kill me, just held me there, in a cave.
- A cave, where?
- Don't know. I wasn't chained, but there was a shield holding me. I tried again and again asking them what I was doing there. They said nothing to me, just were around, waiting, feeding me a couple of times each day. I didn't understand anything. Why I was there, why they were feeding me, keeping me alive. I'm their enemy, and they kept me alive. After a while I noticed my shape changing and after a while I realised that I was pregnant, but not knowing how or why. Then months later, I delivered a baby girl. Then they approached me, I screamed no and the next I know, I'm looking into your eyes and doesn't remember anything.
- They cast a spell on you... To make you forget.
- Oh god, what are they doing to her, why do they want her. There must be a reason.
- But, of course, Giles exclaimed. - It's all clearing up now.
- What do you mean, Buffy asked, quickly.
- This has never occurred before, but a slayers child, is a very powerful human being. And the way a human is raised is how they're ending up to become. We've all seen it happen to Faith.
- Yeah.., Buffy whispered. - She had a terrible childhood and that affected her to go all evil.
- So you're saying that they wish to raise her evil, Angel asked, deeply in thoughts. - But why did they let Buffy go? After she had delivered the baby, she was in no use for them anymore.
- They want me to live, because our daughter is far to young to inherit her powers, Buffy began. - If Faith dies, an other slayer is called, but if I die, my daughter is continuing in my tracks, she's not to be called as a regular slayer until her early teens and then she'll be called, no matter which slayer dies, but then they'll want to kill me.
- That's what they meant with the End of Days. They said it, so I'd give it up, leaving Buffy helpless, an easier target, the longer along she got. If I'd stayed human, I'd probably gotten my strength back from the powers that be and I'd been able to protect her, god what an idiot, I've been.
- Shh, don't blame yourself, she whispered, kissing him gently. - You couldn't know they had planned this all along. You promised me we'd get her back, and now I'm promising you, we'll get her back. We're on our way to figure it out. Now, all we need it to figure out where they took me. A cave, probably in a deserted place somewhere between Sunnydale and LA, probably closer to LA, since they dumped me there. Angel, you're familiar with LA than I, although I used to live there as a kid, but what I mean is that you know about a lot of locations, where demons have been. We'll search them all.
- That's a good plan. But I don't know any caves around LA.
- Well, I have quite a few maps here, Giles said. - We can research it, and you two can get some rest. It looks like you need it. We'll see you tomorrow.
- But it's not that late, Angel said.
- Well, you don't have that much to contribute with this, since you don't know any caves. We need you to be in shape in case we've found anything by tomorrow. It's not necessary for either one of you to waste your energy on this. We'll see you tomorrow.
- Ok, they both said and left.
He followed her home, but not this time either she wanted him to leave. And he didn't leave. He followed her up, they lied down at her bed, falling asleep holding around each other. A few hours later they woke up.
- This is so nice, she whispered.
- I think so too. I'm a little mad at myself for letting the demon play with my head.
- Stop blaming yourself. I understand, why you did what you did. It's nothing you can do about it. You did it because you love me, and I love you for that because the thought behind was pure love. And we're gonna make that demon pay, make it wish it never messed with us.
- That demon is already dead, it's his relatives who has to pay now.
- I know, and they're gonna pay, I promise you that.
- I promise you that, too. I love you.
- I love you, too.
He kissed her tenderly, but as the kiss grew, passion took over. Their hands searched for each others bodies. Some clothes came off. Then he broke it off.
- We shouldn't, it's your moms house and I don't think she'd like...
She kissed him again.
- Mom's at Giles, remember. She's helping them researching. I think this is one of the things we need right now. I miss us being truly together. That was one of the things I thought about, when I was in that cave. I needed you.
- But, are you sure. We've only been back together for a few days.
- Angel, last time it took us only a few hours, but they seemed like years. How do you think this has felt.
- It has felt like an eternity, but we shouldn't loose ourselves.
- We won't. I know that this is forever, don't you?
- Yeah, I know.
- Then there shouldn't be anything keeping us back. We'll get her back, but we shouldn't torture ourselves, until we do.
Angel was about to open his mouth again, but she shut him up with a kiss. And they made love. She fell asleep with her head on his chest, just like last night, but this time, no clothes were between them. They were sleeping peaceful again. Together.
Weeks passed by like that. It seemed like caves wasn't that easy to find in maps. Willow was searching the net for articles about mystical events around LA. They had taken a couple of trips in mountain eras, without finding anything. But it was a big era, so they hadn't managed to search it all. And Buffy and Angel patrolled every night, but no demon came in their direction. One night they were out patrolling, like they used to do.
- She's a month and half now, Buffy said, quietly. - And she doesn't even have a name yet. How can't she have a name yet?
- We haven't found her yet, but we will. I promised you that and you promised me that, remember?
- I'm sorry, I just feel funky. A little sick, that's just all.
- Doesn't seem like it's a 'just'.
- You should think that we'd learn from experience, she said.
- What do you mean?
- I kinda feeling like I felt nine months ago.
- What do you mean, you were about a month a long then... oh.., he suddenly said, understanding what she meant. - You mean, you think you're...
- I think so...
- How do you feel?
- Pretty ok, but it just feels like that we're trying to replace her replace her.
- Nobody can replace her and we're gonna find her...
His cell phone rang. And he hurried to answer it. He talked quickly and hung up.
- What was it?
- It was Cordy, she's had a vision and they think they've tracked down the real cave.
- Then lets go.
- I don't want you... two getting hurt.
- Angel, you're in no capacity to fight them, I am...
- But you might be pregnant.
- If so, I'm only a couple of weeks along, which means I can fight as good as any other slayer. And if you go in there and get hurt I'll only follow and maybe get hurt too. We have to fight this together. And the others are also ready to help. We have no time to argue, lets go.
- Ok, remember I love you.
- And I love you.
They hurried back to Giles' place, where the rest was waiting.
- We've found the place on this map, Cordelia saw some landmarks in her vision, that made it possible for us to find out where it has to be. You two take her with you in Angels car and we'll follow in Joyce's car.
- Got it, Buffy said, quickly. - Lets go. We have no time to loose.
They ran out to the car and pulled out of the driveway. Angel drove while Cordy told Buffy about the vision.
- Did you see the demons? How many where there?
- A lot.
- She's important for them, Angel said. - Without her they can't reach the End of Days. They don't wanna risk anything. And neither do we.
- We have to think of a way to lure them out or, something to kill them.
- If only I had my strength, Angel mumbled.
- You have.
- What? I have? What do you mean by that?
- The Oracles. They told me that you had proven yourself worthy of it, because of your pure heart. A warrior need that. You realised your wrongs and your willing to make them right.
- Oh, thank god. I really need them.
- We still need something to stop them with, but we must not hurt our daughter, so no big weapons. They have her and they know that we'll do anything to get her back. They probably have a shield around her, like they had with me, we need Willow to help us, Buffy said.
- The others are right behind us, Willow and Giles loaded lots of books into Joyce's car, while we waited for you.
- Thank god for them. I don't know how I'd handle this without my friends.
They eventually reached the cave aria. Cordy spotted the cave.
- It's up there, she said, pointing towards the entrance.
- Ok, now we need a plan. Willow, do you think you can turn the shield the other way?
- What do you mean?
- When they had a shield over me, I couldn't go out, but they could come in, can you reverse that so that we can come in, but they can't?
- I think so. You must give me an hour to get the spell and prepare.
- Ok, in the meantime we need to make a plan for getting her out. Willow is seeing that she won't be hurt during the fight, but we need a plan to destroy them. There are plenty of demons in there. The way to destroy them is...
- smashing the jewel in their foreheads, Angel continued. - Hurting them in any other way won't give an effect, except delaying them. But remember they can regenerate themselves and we can't afford that, when they're hurt, smash the jewel.
- Angel and I are going in first, we better sneak in and do an ambush, that's the best we can do.
- Buffy, he said quietly. - We must concentrate on destroying the demons. They can mess with your mind. When Willow turns the shield she's safe. And she stays safe if we destroy the demons.
- I know, they'll try getting my mind off the fight, but I won't let them.
- That's my girl. I love you and won't let you get hurt. Nobody hurts someone that I love and gets away with it.
- I love you, too. Willow, have you found the spell yet?
- Yeah, but we need a place closer than this. We have to get inside. I have to be near and know exactly where she is. And we have to get the demons away from her to turn the shield, or it'll do no difference.
- Ok, we need to find an other entrance. Cordy, did you see an other entrance?
- I'm not sure if it's an other entrance, but I guess it's worth a try.
- Where?
- Behind that huge rock over there.
- Isn't that just a shadow, Buffy wondered.
- No, it's an entrance to a cave.
- We'll try it. We have no other choice.
They walked to the rock and as Cordy said, there was an entrance behind it. They started walking in. It was a tight long corridor, that lead to a minor cave. They saw her, the baby. And two demons.
- Only two, Buffy whispered. - Will, do the spell, before they see us.
Willow started chanting in Latin. They waited and saw something surrounding the baby. It was like a fog, that disappeared. The demons turned around.
- They saw us, come on Angel. It's our turn.
- Remember, don't let them mess with your head.
- I know.
They attacked a demon each and fought for about ten minutes before destroying them. Buffy hurried to the crib where the baby lied. Buffy gently picked her up.
- She's so beautiful, Buffy said. - She has your eyes.
- And your lips, I bet I have to chase boys away from her.
- She's gonna be a heart breaker.
- What shall we name her, he whispered. - She needs a name.
- Gaia, Buffy answered.
- That sounds familiar, Angel said.
- It's a name of the earth Goddess, Willow said. - Buffy are you sure?
- I'm sure. Look at her, she has survived this. She's a Goddess.
- My little Goddess, Angel whispered, lovingly.
- But I must say, this all seems just a little to easy.
- I agree. I think the demons know we're here and they've trapped us in here.
- We have one more fight. Willow, you hold Gaia. And stay here. We're going out.
They listed out the long corridor and when they reached the entrance, they saw the demons.
- Just as I though, Buffy whispered. - A little to easy.
- Now they're gonna pay.
- They can rely on that. Nobody steals my baby without getting me pretty darned ticked.
- There are ten, out there now, but I'm sure there'll be more.
- Then lets take these one out, before more comes.
- Ok, be careful.
- You know I will.
And with that they stormed out and started fighting the closest demons. They moved quickly and got a few good shots at a couple of demons. Two went down, then three and so on. And as they thought, more of them came. But somehow they managed to win, two against sixteen. A week later, Buffy and Angel was at the doctors office with Gaia. Buffy had a broken arm and a few bruises. Angel had gotten some bad cuts, but he was still walking. The doctor came back into the office.
- It seems like you two have been in some hell of a fight, you can be glad the baby wasn't hurt.
- She wasn't near the fight, Buffy answered her, quickly.
- I was talking about the one in here, the doctor answered her and pointed to her abdomen.
- You mean, I really am pregnant, Buffy asked quietly.
- Three weeks along. I don't envy you the time that will come.
- What do you mean. I'm happy that I'm having an other baby.
- I'm talking about the work that follows a baby. You haven't even gotten to the difficult parts with the one you have now and to think about having a pregnancy together with those parts, you'll need the energy. But I'm not saying that it can't be great too, but I can promise you you'll have a lot of work to do.
- Well, that's just a risk we'll have to take, Buffy said, finally smiling.
