He went back to Osprey until May 45 and the war in Europe was over. He sailed out on the liner S.S.Aquitania which was carrying US servicemen home to the States. On reaching New York they were greeted on the Quayside by a Band being conducted by the wife of Glen Miller. 6 men including himself and his best friend Peter Paul, travelled by train up through the Rockies to Port Arthur in Canada. They were the first crew members of a very new ship the Mariner. They sailed down through the Great Lakes to the Atlantic. They had been provisioned so that they could do sea trials and enough to reach England. The main part of the provisions was crates of eggs. No one had seen eggs for years so initially this was a delicacy. However,being told that they would not be allowed to bring them into England this meant that they had to be eaten. So the meals consisted of eggs, eggs, and more eggs cooked in every possible way. After reaching England he first went to HMS Pembroke and then on to Wellington Barracks in Gillingham for Demob. So that's it. 9 ships and 7 years of service. I hope that I have done justice to my Father's Memories. None of us can appreciate the duty these young men performed so that we live in the world as we do today. I would like to thank a few people who helped in the compilation of this site.
