POPULAR  COMMUNITY  FISH

  The fish  below will be broke up in three categories surface swimmers, mid water, and bottom dwellers.  This will be the general area the fish will tend to live at the same time they will venture into all parts of the tank at some point.  Most of the information in this section is from a book called A FISHKEEPER'S GUIDE TO COMMUNITY FISHES. The reason for this is I wanted the information below to be as helpful and accurate as possible.



Surface swimmers

 1:  Betta splendens
(Siamese Fighting Fish)


  When thinking of purchasing these fish you need to keep one thing in mind one male only.  The reason for this is that two males will fight and this sometimes result in the death of one of them.  It  is acceptable two have a solitary male or one male and two females.  These fish and a brilliant color to any tank.

Length: Around 2.4 "
Sex differences: Males have more elongated fins then females
Breeding: It is possible (Bubble-nest builder)


 2: Brachydanio albolineatus
(Pearl Danio)


  This fish has constantly changing color on its flanks.  However this is mainly seen when light shines in the front of the tank. It looks the best when sunlight hits it, but remember sunlight can over heat a tank.  These fish are egg scatters and will eat the eggs if given the chance.

Sex differences: The female is a little shorter then the male and less brightly        colored

 3: Carnegiella marthae
(black-winged hatchetfish)

  This fish has strong pectoral muscles which allows it to fly through the air for some distance.  You should make sure you have a well covered tank.  Most of the time this fish will only eat food on the surface of the water.

Sex differences: If you look at the female from the front she is a little plumper Breeding: Posable, Egg-scatterer

 4: Copella arnoldi
(splashing \ spraying, Tetra)

This fish has an interesting way of breeding.  The female leaps out of the water and deposits eggs on a leaf then the male leaps out and fertilizes them.  The male will then splash them with water so they don't dry out.

 5: Danio aequipinnatus
(Giant Danio)

  This is the largest of its kind and looks best in a school

 6: Gasteropelecus levis
(Silver Hatchetfish)

This kind of fish is considered to be delicate.

 7: Kryptoptrrus bicirrhus
(Glass Catfish)

  This fish is transparent and looks awesome. It's best to keep them in a school a single fish will die most of the time.  It swims and rest at an angle.
