Photographs of narrow gauge coaches in passenger and work train service taken on the Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland
during the week of 19 - 24 September 1976.

By this time the Cariboo "Newfie Bullet" had stopped running and only three mixed trains carried passengers. The map below from the 25th April 1976 Employees Operating Time Table 25 shows the railway system.

Mixed train 207 left St. John's on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30am for Argentia. It returned from Argentia to Whitborne as train 208. The following day as train 232 it travelled to Brigus Junction where it became train 211 and went along the branch to Carbonear, returning as train 212. Finally it again became train 232 for its return to St John's where it was due to arrive at 15:15 on the day following its departure.

A second mixed train was scheduled to run daily on the main line between Deer Lake and Badger as 203 and 204 although I believe the coach was actually hauled between Corner Brook and Grand Falls.

Finally on Wednesdays a third mixed train ran from Clarenville to Bonavista and return.

Business car with steward at St John's. Either Avalon or Terra Nova. Note spotlights on roof, clerestory and absence of rivets.

Accompanying clerestory coach - my notes say it is blue and yellow but this may be caused by the strong reflected light..

POSTSCRIPT

About 1980 steam generator 2952 was re-trucked but not repainted and numbered 15500. It was assigned to Capreol, Northern Ontario, and mainly saw service with the Engineering Department who used it to heat trains transporting work gangs to and from job sites remote from roads (Reference Page 24 [which includes a picture] Canadian National and Canadian Pacific in Northern Ontario by Dale Wilson and Gordon D. Jomini, published by BRMNA Calgary.)

Also two retrucked (36") wooden bodied coaches are at the New Jersey Museum of Transportation/Pine Creek RR of which one (# 506 built 1902) is in service every weekend. The seats from the other were used in a car built for the movie "The Molly McGuires". Thanks to Al Elliott for the information.
