U: umbra thru Uranus
New words are still being added so please don't tell me I've missed stuff out! I'm a student, I do have work to do beyond this!
The first definition of each term is the accepted, or most acceptable, explanation.
This is followed by the interpretation according to the relatively new and exciting Goblin Theory that purports to explain the entire universe neatly and simply.
- umbra
- 1: area of total shadow, especially during solar eclipse.
2: cool and dark central region of a sunspot, with a strong vertical magnetic field.
- Umbriel
- A satellite of Uranus.
- Universal Time
- (a) Determined from observations of the stars, this is a measure of time used for civil timekeeping.
It needs correcting for the observing longitude.
(b) As if time zones weren't complicated enough.
- universe
- (a) Everything we know exists within it, and we can see out only as far as light has had time to travel since the Big Bang.
So when we look out further into space, we are looking backwards in time.
We think of the Universe as being four-dimensional; three spatial dimensions (x, y, z), corresponding to the three orthogonal axes on a graph, and one temporal.
We are free to move in any direction in space, but are condemned forever to move forwards in time.
(b) Unless you're Superman. Who was a goblin. All that stuff about Krypton was just a cover story.
- Uranus
- (a) Green gas giant, seventh from the Sun, made up of hydrogen and helium with trace molecular compounds.
It has five larger moons and ten smaller ones. More info to follow...
