Spiral, transformed by Mojo's scientist Arize (from human stuntwoman Ricochet Rita Wayward) into a six-armed extradimensional sorceress, was one of the founding members of Freedom Force, present during the team's trial-run mission. It is unknown how she hooked up with them beforehand, as it was never mentioned. She was pleased to be a member of the team, for it allowed her to both pass the time while searching for Longshot, as well as to become familiar with their dimension in order to more expediently search. As far as it is known, she never had any special deal with the government, and no criminal record, so was under no real obligation to stick with the team --- and indeed, often left them, sometimes in the middle of a mission, in order to pursue her own agendas. Mystique and the others probably tolerated her violent behaviour and frequent absences because she was so useful to the team; she was the most powerful (and let's face it, most of FF wasn't very powerful), and they owed most of their successes to her abilities. Spiral, although not a mutant, is able to time-dance and weave spells which are often quite effective against an opponent, and her teleportation ability was certainly a bonus to the team. However, she is also slightly insane with a tendency towards violence, and as with some of the other troublemakers on the team, Mystique was left struggling to keep her in check with only some success. Eventually Spiral left the team (off-panel) forever after nearly killing Firestar's father and chasing after the girl.

Since FF, Spiral's been up to a variety of projects (actually, Psylocke's Asian alteration occurred while Spiral was in FF, temporarily AWOL from the team), including the transformation of Karma's siblings, helping Mystique and Wolverine to save the universe, being subjected to the Crimson Dawn and later fighting its Dragons with Excalibur, hassling the X-Babies, and going on a rampage against her creator, Arize. She has also helped and hindered the causes of X-Force and Longshot, demonstrating her rather fickle and at times morally ambiguous nature --- though she is ever practical and always does everything for a reason. She is perpetually busy and will likely pop up again soon to cause trouble, though who she'll be affiliated with --- if anyone --- is always a question. Currently, she is working with the Red Queen's Sisterhood.
