Destiny---real name Irene Adler---was the elderly precognitive member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and Freedom Force. Though often termed "friend" by Mystique, it's a fairly well-known fact that the two were intended to be long-time lovers/partners, and together they raised adopted daughter Rogue (though Mystique is the one Rogue calls 'mother'). Together they formed the core of the BoEM, and later Destiny held an especially high status in FF---in all probability not simply because her abilities were useful to the team. She was a quiet and patient woman despite the sometimes disturbing nature of her powers and the frequent disasters she often foresaw---including her own death. However, because she could see this potential trouble, she was often able to help her team avoid it, and she even helped out the opposition on several occasions by giving them pertinent information about the future. She was fairly kindly though she had self-described "darker ways", and could be rather selective about the predictions she made and who she warned about her visions, but above all, Destiny was loyal to her comrades and a loving partner to Mystique.

Destiny was the first member of FF to die when she met her (foreseen) end on Muir Island, at the hands of the Shadow King-possessed Legion (Uncanny X-Men 255). This naturally distressed Mystique greatly, and she was forced to take a leave of absence to grieve for her companion; much later, after the disbanding of FF, she tried to kill Legion in revenge. Legion may have absorbed Destiny into his mind when she died, for she continued to 'speak' to him inside his head, telling him visions of the future (which eventually led to LegionQuest and the Age of Apocalypse), and even giving him a message for Mystique when she came after him. Most recently, Destiny and Legion (now dead) have been seen as ghosts in Limbo along with Margali Szardos; according to Margali, Destiny is still able to see the future. And interestingly, Irene's journal played an important role in 'The Twelve' plotline recently seen in X-Men comics---it was the first source to reveal the line-up of the group. For this reason, some of the X-Men are searching the world for her remaining diaries (in the current X-Treme X-Men series).
