Ruins of Great Zimbabwe near Masvingo, Zimbabwe.
This was once a thriving city established by the Bantu people ca. 800 AD.
They were conquered possibly by the Karanga who are believed to be the
ancestors of the modern day Shona people.
This city was suddenly abandoned and fell into ruin over the centuries.
It is only in the 2Oth century that it is being resurrected.
Modern day Zimbabwe was, obviously, named after this ancient city.
