There are many expansions before and after the revised cards of magic. Expansion sets before could be antiqueties, alpha, beta, and unlimited sets. Generally, alpha and beta cards are worth more and can be identified as having a black border around them. Alpha cards however have a bigger black border than beta cards. As well as anitqueties, there are Arabian Knights.
Most people think of revised cards as the beginning, however the expansion sets listed above did come first. Perhaps we think of these revised cards as the first step in building a magic deck. If you want to make your deck better however, you might consider using later expansions such as legends, ice age, fallen empires, mirage, tempest, chronicals, 3rd addition, and so forth. Here there are also many more techniques discussed.
In expansion sets beyond revised cards, there are also many different types of abilities as well as different colored cards. Here are just a few examples of the new abilities which creatures may possess.
Rampage
Rampage is the number of power and toughness a creature will gain for each creature beyond the first it is blocked by. This may sound confusing so let me give you an example. Take a creature which is 7/7 rampage: 2, for example. If the opponent wants to kill this creature but can't kill it with only one creature, your opponent would block with more than one creature. However since this creature has rampage: 2, then for each creature beyond the first one your opponent assigns to block your 7/7 creature, your 7/7 creature will gain 2/2 for each creature beyond the first. So if your opponent blocks the 7/7 creature with 2 creatures, your creature now becomes 9/9. With three creature your 7/7 creature is 11/11. And so forth.
Flanking
Some creatures in expansion sets have the ability to flank. When blocked, a creature with flanking can reduce the creature which is blocking it by -1/-1. This is extremely useful, however if the other creature which is blocking a creature with flanking has flanking as well, this effect is negated.
Shadowing
Shadowing can be a disadvantage. Any creature with shadow can be blocked by only creatures which also have shadow. However if you have a creature with the ability of shadowing, then you cannot block any of your opponent's creatures with shadowing. This can be a disadvantage however.
Gold cards can be creatures, or enchantments as well as spells, too. When a card has a gold border, it means that their casting cost requires two or more different realms. For example a Nicol Bolas requires 2 reds, 2 blues, 2 swamps, and 2 colorless. This creature is composed of 3 realms. Gold cards are affected by any spell which targets either of their realms. For example since a Nicol Bolas has black in his casting costs, then he cannot be terrorred even though he has red and blue as well. Likewise, this can be an advantage or disadvantage. Additionally, you will be required to play more than one color if you decide to use gold cards. However most gold cards are great in abilities and effects!
