Even after I began doing my own thing, which was mixing sound, I continued to work with Shelton doing studio installations, maintenance and equipment modifications. It was while doing a machine mod at Audio Media that I finally got my break into recording. Just like most of the 'A string' talent of those days, Paul Whitehead let me cut my recording teeth on SAL 'sound-a-likes'. It was a dream come true, one I'd had before I ever met Shelton Rose. I have a little story about my very first recording gig... well actually it was for family and I didn't get paid ;) Shelton being Mr. Fixit, got his brother some free studio time at The Castle. Shelton was playing drums (quite extraordinary at that as well) and Neil Wilburn, the house engineer was supposed to engineer the weekend session. I was to be his second... I get there and Neil starts showing me around the studio, which I was already fairly familiar with. Finally I told Neil that I apreciated his extra attention, but I felt comfortable enough to just ask questions if I needed to. Neil smiles at me and says "I don't think you understand, Robbie... I am going to play golf, YOU are engineering this session." Needless to say you coulda knocked me over with a feather! So my very first recording session was solo in a 'State of the Art', Harrison/Studer package, recording facility. I think we did 4 of Jimmy Rose's tunes. Cut the tracks, did the overdubs and mixed them in 2 days... 2 VERY LONG days. Just the beginning of many ridiculously long days that I have spent in most of the recording facilities on and around music row.
To name a few of the albums I've worked on... Steve Earle's 'Guitar Town', Reba McEntire's 'Whoever's In New England', Ricky Skaggs' 'Country Boy', Waylon Jennings' 'Will The Wolf Survive', Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's 'Partners, Brothers & Friends', John Schneider's 'A Memory Like You', Marie Osmond's 'There's No Stopping Your Heart'. About the biggest and one of the more recent projects I worked on before leaving Nashville was the first five classical CDs offered exclusively thru Victoria's Secret. The last time I went to visit my old studio family at Iliad & Odyssey Productions in Nashville, Paul Whitehead was in the midst of planning a huge party to celebrate the Collector's Edition 5 CD set 'Classics by Request', going platinum.
While swapping stories with Paul one day, we found we both got our first break into studio recording via Neil Wilburn. A great story which Paul tells best, but... Paul was majoring in business (as I recall) at Vanderbilt. One day he was strolling down Music Row on 17th Av S, by Columbia Records (I think) and there are all these cadillacs adorned with steer horns parked about, so he had to go see what's up with this and just walks in :) First person to speak with him was Neil, who promptly proceeded to give him a tour and take a liking to him... Neil asks Paul "How would you like an engineering position here?" LOL... you see, engineers were union back then and they needed an engineer there over night to studio sit. Neil recruited Paul and Paul took to it like a duck to water. He is a fine engineer, producer and smart business man no doubt. Shelton referred to Paul as "the terminally hip Paul Whitehead".
I started doing sound at Rum Boogie Cafe on Beale Street in 1992. James Govan and Don Chandler were part of Don McMinn's "Rum Boogie Band". Don retired that band in Jan '94 and Preston Lamb kept James and DC on to form the current house band "James Govan and The Boogie Blues Band". I left for a couple years due to a short move to Jonesboro, AR and was thrilled when DC called to see if I might want to come back. I love my gig there, most all the folks I get to work with, the Beale Street atmosphere, Memphis Music and the Blues. It's also my main "real life" socializing :)

Speaking of IRL... Lordy is my incredible lil companion. I adopted him from the Humane Society last fall. He'd run off and got himself hit by a car, so they were called to come pick him up and care for him. I was checking him out when they brought what was obviously a new dog into the kennel room. Even from the far corner of this huge room, Lordy lunges at his cage door to let the new dog know he was in charge of things in there ;) My friend talked me into leaving lil Lordy there because after all, he only had 3 good legs...

Upon awakening the next day, I knew I had to go get him right away! Even called to make sure nobody else got him before I could get over there. Lordy is now in charge of things here, no doubt ;) His name truly fits him! He has no problem communicating his many wishes lol. I may soon give him his own website. Whenever I run out to the store or someplace real quick (otherwise he has his own lil "den" ;), I come back in to find him at the computer... he's even tried to surf :o He loves sitting in my lap while I'm on it, too. Oh!... his leg and hip has healed quite nicely, even tho he certainly did just fine on only 3 legs hehe.
Most of my hobbies and interests revolve around my computer. Even my gardening, as I now get to surf thru page after page of plant related info lol seriously tho, gardening has been a passion of mine for many years. I also spend alot of time learning web design and page building. And then there's my addiction, er... role playing games ;) Not much else to tell right now... LOL... if you even made it down this far in the page! If there's anthing else you want to know or see on my pages, please always feel free to send me an email.
