NUMBER CRUNCHING:
It was a bad Friday night for Fox as its Friday flagship, "Firefly", made a plunge in the ratings, not only paling next to the baseball coverage that pre-empted it last week, but also to its own performance of two weeks hence. "Firefly"'s Friday showing was lower rated than any episode of "Dark Angel" that had run in that slot last year.

But the week's big news came before the nationals came out, when NBC announced the cancellation of its slowly-sinking "Providence". The show, which had not been renewed for a full season, was being monitored very carefully, and despite very good numbers on Friday (comparatively speaking, of course), the network decided the show was not what it could be, and chose to end it.

On the WB side of things, "What I Like About You" and "Sabrina" seem to be prospering only with their target audiences -- the network needs to address grabbing older viewers and fleshing out that 18-34 demo (which WILAY could probably do more effectively that "Sabrina", with more attention paid to the burgeoning romance of Valerie and Jeff). Also, "Reba" and "Greetings from Tucson" don't seem to be holding their previous week's total audience, especially "Reba", which experienced its second straight week of lower ratings numbers

As is evidenced by the below blurb from the WB, "WILAY" and "Reba" are the two leaders for the night in female teens, with "Sabrina" between them losing female teen audience...sometime after the sweeps, a possible swap of "WILAY" and "Sabrina" may be in the offing...it's probably in the WB's best interest now to get these two shows back to back and then build on either side of them.

FROM THE WB PRESS RELEASE:
First-year comedy "What I Like About You" kicked the night off by ranking #2 in its time period in persons 12-34 (1.9/8), women 12-34 (2.5/11), #3 in women 18-34 (2.0/8) and #1 in teens (2.4/12) and female teens (3.8/17, its all-time best in the demo).

"What I Like About You" scored week-to-week gains in nine key demos, including +19% in persons 12-34, +25% in women 12-34, +14% in adults 18-34 (1.6/7) and +18% in women 18-34.
