NUMBER CRUNCHING:
This looks to be the last
"normal" week of the TV season. As the ratings were released
this week, America was on the brink of war in the Middle East, and CBS
was poised to spend the next two Fridays either reporting on either college
basketball or war. NBC's "Mister Sterling" has limped to what
are probably their last episodes, and "Fastlane" seems to have
worn out its Friday welcome. The sole constants on the schedule, as they
have been all season, are the WB comedies, "America's Funniest Home
Videos" and UPN Movie Friday. The stability of "Videos"
has helped it get stronger in the ratings, and the mini reality boomlet
sure didn't hurt its chances any. And demographically, no new WB comedy
has been stronger than "What I Like About You", one of only
two new WB shows this season to "stay the course" nearly every
week of the season.
This week the numbers were affected by the
first week of lower clearances for the WB schedule, which will begin to
be affected by sports coverage on a more frequent basis (regional
basketball, baseball). It saw new episodes of "Reba" and
"Grounded for Life" hit season lows, while "What I Like
About You" and "Sabrina" held to typical repeat levels.
The red flag may have gone up on "Fastlane", which has been
unable to make a dent in the Friday schedule.
The refocus of attention on Amanda Bynes at the
WB due to her movie "What a Girl Wants" being released may
result in bumped up numbers for "WILAY" in the coming weeks. The real test to see
if we've become Amanda Nation will be April 4th, when the WB presents a
new "What I Like About You" episode in conjunction with the
release of WAGW.
