NUMBER CRUNCHING:
Despite the
runaway performance of ABC with an incredibly exciting college football game
(which wound up the #1 show for the week), the WB Friday ratings still managed
to surpass last year's numbers (which return to the chart effective this week)
throughout the schedule. "What I Like About You" seems to be getting
up a head of steam it will need to parry with the new competition of "the
second season", and if it still shows improvement we could be very
seriously thinking "second season" very soon ourselves...mainly, a
new fall season of "WILAY" could be announced this month during the
networks' first round of fall renewals. After all, it's the strongest sitcom
other than "Reba" on the WB's schedule now. The other Friday shows
all held their own against UPN's "Gun Shy".
WB also got very good returns on its first new
reality project of the season, "High School Reunion" (3.1/82),
nearly matching the highest number of the season for "Angel". But
the true test will come on Thursday as the repeat telecasts of "HSR"
and the new "The Surreal Life" go into battle against NBC's big
guns.
