IMAGES AND RECAP: PART ONE |

Gary can't wait...the Staten Island Sideshow is in town! |

Holly is wondering why Gary doesn't do anything more
substantial with his school break... |

...like sleep. |

Holly lets Gary know the sad truth about New York City: there
are freaks everywhere you look. |

But none of them can swallow a paper bag whole! |

Kiki, Valerie's assistant at Harper and Diggs, calls her to
say she's not able to come to work because she's in Orlando with
some guy. |

As Gary leaves to see more freaks of nature get their freak
on... |

...Holly watches Val freak out over the loss of her
assistant for a few days. |

Why waste $500 on someone who can't even pass a drug test
without having to "borrow" a urine sample? |

Holly didn't hear the part about the urine sample, but that
"$500" came in loud and clear. |

Holly suggests that she work with Val for a few days,
because she could use the $500... |

...and she could get some use out of a skirt she's saved for
just such an occasion. |

Val tells Holly she's to conduct herself in an absolutely
professional manner at Harper and Diggs. |

She can do that...right? |

At Harper and Diggs, Valerie displays her latest
"get": Kira Martin on the cover of My Magazine. |

H&D's newest employee couldn't be happier! |

Like we said...absolutely professional! |

There's a lot Holly needs to understand about the PR
business...like why they would play up the fact Kira got a boob
job, then deny it just as quickly. |

Since Smelly Susan is out of the picture, the firm needs a
new executive director. It's down to these two: Lauren, just in
from Chicago, and Val. |

Holly ponders if she has the qualifications for the job. |

But Val's off to a bad start as Lauren comments the pic of
Kira that she signed off on makes her look cross-eyed. |

Vic is slow to agree, but the more he looks at the pic, the
more he concurs that she looks cross-eyed. |

It's just another one of those weird
quirks of optical illusion that Val has to address. |

Holly notices that Lauren is getting a little competitive in
front of Vic. |

Holly tries to ID Vic as Val's superior... |

...when in reality he was the guy she asked to fetch trash
bags. |

Val wants the promotion since it would leave her as the
second in command at H&D. |

Holly sees that "cross-eyed" remark of Lauren's as
just a power play, and she believes Lauren is capable of worse. |

She believes that the Chicago hotshot should be brought
down... |

...but can't resist the opportunity to dish
on Val's would-be rival. |

Val just thinks the only thing Lauren is doing, is her job. |

And Vic's done his job, getting Holly her trash bags. |

Later, Holly's in the break room with Vic and Lauren. |

As Holly is serving coffee to the business titans... |

...she sees Lauren hand Vic a box of fine Cuban cigars. |

Word gets around to Val, naturally. |

And Holly had help for the simile
concerning Lauren. |

Even though Holly has confirmed her own suspicions that
Lauren is bad news... |

...and that this stranger from Chicago is slowly moving in
on her turf... |

...Val thinks it's just high-school-style one-upsmanship. |

But Holly's got news for her. |

Val would much rather the best person get the job, not the
one who dazzles with flash and style... |

...and the occasional putdown, as Lauren lords over the
cross-eyed thing again. |

Now Val's concerned. She announces that she has a plan. |

Holly's happy cause it looks like Val's finally getting a
spine. |

She plans to write Vic a nice little report in a neat little
cover. |

But the paper pushing doesn't sit well with Holly, who
thinks the weapons should be a little more blazing. |

Again, Val insists she'll work hard for the promotion. (We
emphasize this too mainly to get more pics of Jennie in the
recap.) |

But Holly is out for blood, and she leaves to think things
over. |

Just back from the Staten Island sideshow is Gary, whose
seen things he will not soon forget. |

Jeff winces when he hears about one of the freaks, a chap
who ate a bucket full of hair. |

He tells Holly about still being able to hear the crunching
sounds. |

Which is a heckuva thing to discuss when people are eating,
after all. |

Holly's in to pick up Val's lunch. Which does not include
human hair. |

Holly describes Val's barracading herself in her office
writing the report. |

Jeff's hoping she's not going to be too much longer because
he's got two tickets to the Knicks-Wizards game. |

It's Michael Jordan's last game in Madison Square Garden
before his next retirement. |

No matter how much Jeff wants to see Jordan's last visit to
New York... |

...Holly wants to see Val get that promotion. |

Holly explains the competition and the gifts that have been
flying around H&D over the course of the day. |

But it's not enough to convince Jeff to give up the tix. |

So Holly gives Jeff a different angle |

No matter if Jeff gives up the tickets, he may still get to
see Michael Jordan... |

...only this time, up close and personal. |

So Jeff gives up the passes to Holly, who passes them on to
Vic in Val's name. |

Day is done, and our star pupil kicks back and tells us what
she's learned. |

Like the right way to greet your
coworkers. |

Vic tells Val he was very impressed by the report. |

Val's happy because it appears that her hard work was
recognized... |

...but then Holly mentions the Knicks-Wizards tickets. |

Val cautions Holly about doing that underhanded stuff... |

...until she learns that it works! |

Or kind of works...Vic announces that Lauren was able to
implement all of Val's good ideas! |

Another setback for Val up the corporate ladder... |

...as Val gets set to let Holly have it for meddling in her
office affairs. |
