Your first doctor visit

No matter where you got your new puppy, a friend, pet shop, or rescue shelter, you first move should be to your local vet. Wherever possible, have the following information with you.....

  • Birthdate or age.

  • Records of any vaccinations

  • A fresh stool sample

A puppy needs certian antibodies within the first few weeks of life. It is important that the vet know the age of the puppy to access it's needs. Ask lots of questions...that's what the doctor is there for. Make a list if necessary and take notes. On this first visit, the doctor will do a routine exam and access the overall health of your puppy, as well as check the stool sample for internal parasites.

I have included a couple of charts that you can print for reference. Feel free to print as many as you'd like. My mommy keeps mine on the fridge door! Just be sure to take it with you each time you visit the doctor so you can keep it up to date. It will also help in the case of an emergency and you have to take your dog to a vet that is not familier with it.

I have also included a 'general information' form that will help you, should you ever have to leave the dog with a sitter or travel. Keep all these forms in a safe place...they are as important as your own medical records.
