Tip of the Week
-----------------------------------------------------
Writers are concerned with how to develop a good story and how best to tell that story;  look no further than your protagonist.  Good stories always involve a protagonist with whom we have some empathy.  Why?  Because if we, the audience, didn't care then we keep turning the pages.
Character empathy crucial. While you're working on your protagonist, keep in mind that he or she really needs to want something very badly.  It is the pursuit of this ‘something’ that is the driving force of the story.  Consequently, this pursuit should not be easy.  Remember Dorothy from Kansas?  If she had made it to Oz and then home again without encountering the wicked witch, a dodgy wizard and many other obsticles would anybody have cared when she sang ‘We're off to see the Wizard...

Bonus tip: Always back-up your files.
OK. I can hear the chorus now, you all do. In fact anybody with half
a brain cell saves their files on disc or some other portable device.
I do normally.  Except this week.
We were having a new computer.  One of those mega-memory, super-fast
jobs with a CD rewriter.  It was due to be delivered on thursday but I missed
the delivery by five minutes while I was in a meeting.  The  delivery was rescheduled for Saturday morning, unfortunately friday night the hard drive crashed.
The next issue of Voyage and Colonies magazines and five books scheduled for release next month are now random electrons drifting on the ether.
Sod's Law?  Alien conspiracy? Sabotage by disgruntled employees? Unlikely. Never put down to malice what can be put down to stupidity.  Especially your own.
I hope you enjoy this issue.      John Dunne      ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The News This Week
++------trAce opening its biggest venture yet: the trAce Online Writing School. http://tracewritingschool.com
With users in over a hundred countries and thousands of hits every day, trAce is widely recognised as the most significant community of writers in the world. Now it is taking the obvious next step and opening an Online Writing School to bringtogether this huge resource of talent and match it up with creative people who wantto learn how to write on and for the web as well as for print. Based at The Nottingham Trent University, England, and collaborating with The Hive enterprise centre, the trAce Online Writing School is well-placed to make the mostof its extensive international connections with arts, business and new media. The School plans to fill its virtual classrooms with students interested in learning whatthe web can do for them and their writing, and they won't be disappointed - the tutors will be some of the best writers working on the internet today. ----The BBC will be featuring Original poetry in The Weekend Poem on the BBC Knowledge Enhanced Text Service.Further info http://www.bbc.co.uk/knowledge/home/text/--------There is an alarming (or maybe not) trend in the publishing world concerning the rising sums being paid in advances to authors. Publishers are staking their money on "event" books and “name” authors, and hope to use the multi-million dollar payouts as a marketing ploy to get their titles recognition. Some think it’s a risky gamble with the potential for a big payday, while others believe it will jeopardize the loyalty of renowned authors to their imprint.-------------++

The Writers mantra
To Write I think quite hard enough
To earn the cash and buy the stuff
To pay the bills and oil the wheels
To find the words to write the books
To satisfy the wife and kids
To make the sales - to win the bids
To provide the toys, the clothes, the rings
To pay for only the best of schools
To occasionally have to bend the rules
To be only as good as your last piece
To celebrate with an expensive meal
To grab a break and a friendly smile
To long for the chance to reflect for a while
To lie awake and worry at night
To pray you continue to get it right

I am a freelance writer
I love the empty life I lead.
