     Editorial
For the past two years we have brought you this newsletter and Global Competition News free of charge, despite the cost in man hours it takes to do the research and compile it.  It is a service we are happy to provide because as the leading quote at the top of this newsletter says 'knowledge is something to be shared'.  However, like all other internet based publications we are subject to the ups and downs of the market and while we have weathered the current slump better than any of our counterparts, things have reached the point where we need to look at ways of financing this service more effectively.
We have kept a close watch on other writers newsletters over the past six months to assess the effectiveness of the options open to us:

1 - Switching to paid subscription - several newsletter have done this and retained around 10% of their readers.  They are managing to cover their costs and the reduced subscription base has reduced the workload involved.

2 - Take Paid advertising - at the moment the only advertising we have is free subscribers ads.  Not really an option since there is very little advertising revenue available on line at the moment.

3 - Cease Publication completely - A last resort.  However, by providing WOW and GCN we have inadvertantly hit the sales of Newswire which carries much more indepth and wide ranging information.  Apparently you feel that the information provide in WOW and GCN is of such quality that there is no need for the extra material in Newswire.

 4 - Introduce a voluntary $5 per year subscription

5 - Ask all subscribers to buy one book or magazine

6 - Introduce a range of affiliate programmes - such as paid to surf and paid to read emails to which all subscribers would have to join.  This way you can help support the newsletters by clicking on a couple of links each week and it does not cost you a cent.

7 - Similar to 6 is the paid to read sites - We used to post articles and stories on Themestream which many of you read and help support the newsletters through the fees we received.  Themestream is now gone but there other sites that pay you to read.

We are interested in hearing your views, so please cast your vote for the option you prefer by clicking on that option and sending the blank email generated.  If you want to make comments please do so in the email.  You can vote for more than one option by click on each link you are in favour of.

Our own preference is to set up an system which will cost you least, for example a combination of 6 and 7.  However we are aware that some of you may prefer the direct response available through options 4 and 5.

Since it is going to take several months of fine tuning to get a system which suits the majority of our subscribers, and we need to take action now before we are hit by unexpected costs such as email or website costs being introduced(something all the providers are heading towards) we are going to introduce a combination of options 4,5,6 and 7.
To start things off you might like to take a look at the following link:
Do you want to get paid for reading your e-mail? It's FREE and you're reading them anyway so why not.  Send More Info
http://www.sendmoreinfo.com/id/76722   It takes just five minutes to register and they only send you a couple of emails a week.  But best of all as well as helping to support this newsletter you can make money for yourself.

On a more positive note, Colonies SF magazine has received a glowing review from Redsine.  You can read it in full at the following address:  http://www.redsine.com/archives/four/non-1.html
I hope you enjoy this issue.

Features - So You Want to be a Short Story Writer
  Join the queue!
The vast majority of would-be writers start out wanting to write short stories drawn by the idea of sharing the lure of sharing the highs and lows of the expansive emotions and imaginings with the rest of the world.  After all, providing you have the talent would easier way can there be to make a living at writing, right? - Wrong.
There are several pitfalls you may not yet have considered:
1- As Mark Twain said: "The only difference between fact and fiction is that fiction has to make sense."  Most of the stories I reject as editor of Voyage short story magazine and Colonies SF magazine are rejected because the writer gets so caught up in the story telling the neglect simple things like continuity and plausibility.
2- If your story is good it will eventually find a home.  Wrong - market research is just as important in fiction as it is for fact-based article markets.  Study your markets carefully and THEN write a story to suit one of them.
There isn't the space to go into the complexities of story structure and characterisation here, but we can get you started on magazines to aim your stories at.  There are not that many magazines about that pay the sort of rates that will keep you in the lap of luxury and competition for space in those is incredibly tough.  But there are many more world wide which pay reasonable rates.
What are reasonable rates?  Any magazine paying 3 cents a word or more is considered to be a professional market, while 1 - 3 cents a word is more usual.  Unfortunately the majority pay less than 1 cent a word, some only a fixed fee of perhaps $5 per story regaudless of length or content.
Here's a dozen to get you started.  Remember to study them carefully before submitting.

 Neolithon
by Steve Sneyd and John Light
Poems and drawings born of ancient stones. Both Steve Sneyd and John Light write about the future. They gave a joint poetry reading at the Newham Science Fiction Festival and more recently read at the Newcastle book launch of Iron Press's anthology "Star Trek - The Poems". This is their first published collaboration and grew out of the interest they also share in those cultures of the past that have left only stone remains and myths.
