Your Letters and News
Hi John, I received a mail from a friend saying that your site was providing biographical data on its writers, and it was suggested I contact you with something usable.I am living in Dublin. I am married, writing full time, have recently finished a book of short stories called Key Elements in Being Nice, Playing Fair, and Getting Places, and am working on a novel at the moment.I really don't know what else to put in that starts sounding like padding. If you think that's ok, or want something different, let me know. Thanks,  Oran Ryan

(ED:If we have published your stories, poems or features in any ofour printed publications or email newsletters and you would likeyour bio
included please send us the details.  You can check outall the bios at:http://members.fortunecity.com/regentbooks/contributors.html )

Tip of the Week
-----------------------------------------------------
We recently surveyed over 200 independent bookstore owners about
what they look for in buying books by new writers. One of the most
influential selling points is a Log Line that captures the essence,
tone, and overview of your story. It’s important to express the
events of your story as well as how these events will affect the
characters.Keep these three rules in mind; 1) keep it short,
2) set the scene, 3) capture the story’s tone.Here’s a sample of
these three rules at work.
“A story of Nick's unrequited love for the mysterious Anna
unfolds against the backdrop of social and political revolution,
Vietnam and a baby boomer generation just coming into its own.”
The objective is to motivate a Buyer to want to read your material.
This example from Ron Phillips new books Visions of Johanna
has shot it to the top of the best seller list in just three weeks.
Use provocative nouns and verbs that invoke the emotion you’re
trying to capture (i.e. Vietnam, Baby boomers, unrequited love).
Do not use words that brag about your story by claiming it is
exciting! amazing! action-packed! will be a big hit! etc.
Most buyers will judge your work by the Log Line, so take the
time and get it right.

Editorial
Revealing the Mystery behind publishing schedules.

Have you ever had a story, poem or feature accepted by a print or online magazine, been told it would appear in the January or march or whichever issue and then beenleft wondering what happened when it was not published on schedule? If you have ever had anything accepted
by Voyage, Colonies SF, or New MillenniumNovels then the answer is almost certainly Yes.

The same thing often happened to me during my years as a freelance writer.  Mostoften it was fiction and poetry magazines and usually the bread and butter variety;those paying small fees and with relatively small circulations. There can be many reasons for a publication not being produced on time and 9 timesout of 10 it is not because they are about to fold.  On the contrary, it could simply bethat one of their other publications is doing very well and like every good business the publisher pays more attention to the one which is putting food on the table and payingthe staff.Where computers and printing equipment are involved breakdowns are inevitable.

Even large publishers have this problem but they have the financial clout to be swapprinters, buy new equipment as and when they want etc.  Small publishers rarelyhave this option being forced to wait until the problem is resolved.Slow Sales - few small fiction and poetry magazines make a profit.  Less than1 per cent of the people who submit to Voyage magazine ever actually buya copy.  There is very little advertising available for this type of magazine sowhere does the money come from to pay our contributors?  It can only comefrom extending the time between issues and generating more sales.  This mayseem hard on the writer but the alternative would be to continue publishing atthe usual times and face closing in the long run. Overseas magazines can often take a considerably variable amount of time to reach their destination.

Colonies SF magazines has many US subscribers, ten who live within 100 miles of each other in California.  You would think aftera 6000 mile journey from the UK they would all arrive within a day or two of eachother, but we have found delivery times varying by up to a month. Next time a magazine does not arrive on time with your carefully crafted storyin it, by all means query the editor but bare in mind that he/she is probably nottrying to rip you off and will already have had a very bad day.

Don't forget to send us your letters, questions or responses.

I hope you enjoy this issue.

John Dunne

2- Features First Steps to Online Writing that Pays (PART 1)

Last issue we looked at the pay-per-view markets for writers that can giveyou a respectable secondary income stream from your writing.  Like anythingelse though, it takes some work to generate a steady flow.  There are anincreasing number of people on the net who are writing
exclusively for thesesites and commit everything they have to posting new articles and promoting themeveryday. I am not advocating that, rather that you could spare three or four hours a week.If you can post two or three articles each week that should take less than an hourthen the rest of the time can be spent on promotion.  The easiest way is throughthe many online forums, some of which are dedicated to one or more of these sitesand other which are more general announcement lists. There are hundreds to chose from so here are just a few.

I would advise opting for the daily digest version where possible as some of thesegroups are very active.  The rules for each vary so take your cue from theintroductory message and learn from the people who use them regularly.you will soon get the hang of it. In part 3 we will look at some of the more traditional-type sites on the Internetwhere you can get paid a flat fee for your writing related articles, stories or poems.

2 - Feature Extra
The Tetractys — a new verse form
A short form of verse the tetractys

You pronounce it to rhyme with malpractise It seems that Euclid, the mathematician of classical times, considered the numberseries 1,2,3,4 to have mystical significance because its sum is 10, so he dignifiedit with a name of its own - Tetractys. This suggested a new form of syllabic verseconsisting of five lines, the first of which contains a single syllable, the second two, the third three, the fourth four and the last ten syllables. If centred, the form gives a pleasing triangular shape:
Fat Man Walking
                         Bulk
                       teeters
                      gracefully
                    on tiny feet -

as any ballerina, light and neat Turn the tetractys on its head and you get the reverse tetractys:      As windblown, random, as subject to
chance,
                      our short days drift
                       - on thin threads
                             helpless
                              dance.

[N.B. Although these particular examples rhyme and alliterate, tetractyses do not have to do so.]The tetractys could be Britain's answer to the haiku. Its challenge isto express a complete thought, profound or comic, witty or wise, within the narrow compass of twenty syllables.Or forty.
Top one tetractys with another, and we get... Lifelines

                              Life
                        depends
                        on a strand
                       as frail as fine
as a migrating spider's silken line.

As windblown, random, as subject to chance,
                our short days drift -
                    on thin threads
                        helpless
                         dance. ...

a double tetractys. There are another three possible shapes for a centred double tetractys.Of course, you don’t need to centre the tetractys; it can also be left- orright- justified. These shapes, too can be inverted and combined, whichopens up further possibilities... I leave you to work them out for yourself. If you’re really ambitious you could write a tetractys series, but for thecompetition only single and double tetractyses are acceptable.

The Perfect Tetractys

The perfect tetractys would satisfy all the following criteria:
1. the correct syllable count,
2. meaningful words (e.g. not the, a , an) in the single-syllable line,
3. line breaks that make sense, ie. conform to normal syntax, notseparating words that quite obviously form a unit of meaning.  (If 2 and 3 did not apply, writing a tetractys would merely involve takinga twenty-syllable line and chopping it arbitrarily into the requisite lengths— it doesn’t take a poet to do that!)
In addition to these the normal criteria for good poetry apply:
4. effective use of imagery,
5. effective choice of words,
6. appeal to the ear, certainly by rhythm, possibly by use of other soundeffects (rhyme, alliteration etc),
7. and lastly, and most importantly, appeal to the intellect and the emotions;moving the reader to laughter, tears, deep thought, anger...

It’s a difficult form.
Somebody, I forget who, said "If a thing’s worth doing, it’s worth doing badly.
"In writing a tetractys it is essential to satisfy at least the first and last of thecriteria. To satisfy most of the rest is highly desirable. Manage to satisfy allseven... Well, we all aim for perfection, but usually have to settle for mereexcellence. The tetractys is a challenging but rewarding short form. It takes a great dealof ingenuity and requires some patience to work your deathless thought intothe prescribed format, but isn’t it densityof expression and verbal dexteritythat distinguishes poets from other writers? [If you’d like to see more examples of tetractyses and you’re on the web, have a look at http://daedalian.co.uk ]

BECOME A COMMUNITY HOST OR COLUMNIST FOR eBOOKNET
Lively opinion columns and community discussion are two of eBookNet's
biggest draws. We're counting on you to help us keep these features going!

Due to budget cutbacks, eBookNet recently lost the excellent community
management services which were provided by Participate.com. That means we
need your help. We need a few good volunteers to help us monitor our
message boards, seed the boards with provocative conversation-starting
entries, and tell us about the most interesting conversations so we can
highlight them on eBookNet.  Community hosts have a role similar to the
Guides on About.com.  We'll even put your picture and bio on the site! If
you are interested in standing up for ePublishing and helping to nurture
eBookNet's community discussions, please write to volunteers@ebooknet.com.
Tell us which discussion(s) you might be interested in hosting. Thanks!

Also, as the re-launched site heads into its second year, we're looking
for new columnists to submit monthly essays on the eBook-related themes
that interest them most. Are you a writer at heart? Got something to say?
