   Your Letters and News

Dear John,
I have now read the first one [New Millennium Novels].
Must be my taste, but I found the science fiction here the most appealing and
readable. Especially John Light's 'No Space In Time'. So, if I am as a
contributor eligible to vote, he gets mine. With Sean Brown's next.
Can I also say, John,  I do appreciate - as someone who also edits and publishes -
the amount of work that you must have put into just this first issue. So, thank you.
Best wishes,
Sam
ED - Congratulations to Sam !!!  We have just heard he has been nominated for this
years Booker Prize with his novel 'Sister Blister'
---------------------------

Hello John --

Fiona Avery recommended your magazine as a good potential market and, after
taking a look at issue one, I have to agree with her.  I am attaching a story
in ASCii DOS text for your review.  It is about 4200 words in length, and I
think that it would be a good match for your magazine.

I would be interested in doing a serial tale with the characters as set forth
in this first story, adding more characters as the tale develops over time
and losing certain characters as the plot needs.  My mind has already spun
out several possible stories with this group of characters, and I would be
happy to discuss the possibilities with you if you are interested.
I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,
Christy Hardin Smith

     Dear Editor - NEW

     Editorial
I'll keep it short and sweet this week due to pressure of work.

We are over the moon about Sam Smith's nomination for the Booker prize. No
one more than Sam epitomises the true spirit of the dedicated writer.  Down
the years he has had a number of job ranging from psychiatric nurse to
postman, anything in fact that would allow him to pursue his writing ambitions.
Anyone just starting out would do well to try to emulate Sam.  If you would
like to read some of his work click on this link to the first chapter of his book
We Need Mad Men

On September 1 Regent Publications celebrates five years in business.  We
have come a long way since then, faced the trials and tribulations all new
businesses do and thankfully come out the other side stronger and more
focused.  To mark the event we are giving our website a major makeover
and we will be giving away hundreds of magazines and books.

Our thanks to Fiona Avery, world renown SF novelist and screenwriter
for Babylon 5 and Crusade who has been promoting Colonies for us
in America.  Having come across our website Fiona immediately saw the
possibilities of a magazine designed to generate future SF tv series and films.
It is a huge boost for us to have somebody of Fiona's calibre on board; it has
already generated several enquires from several other top class writers.
But don't think that excludes you if you have never been published before,
it is the story that counts and we will always work with a writer to help
the right story get published.

Themestream the site that lets post your articles and pays you has finally
paid up the first checks this week.  Six weeks late, but hey, that's
publishing; The magazine waits for the advertisers to pay up before they
can pay the contributors.  It's not ideal, but it works - in the end - and
considering I picked up $458 for what amounted to about 10 hours work
spread over a month it was well worth it.  They still have problems to sort
out, but so do we and we've been at it for five years.  This is definitely
worth a look.

Thanks to Steve Rea of Stamford, UK who introduced 21 new
subscribers to WOW news since the last newsletter.  He has received
a 12 issue subscription to Voyage short story and poetry magazine in
return. We are continuing the drive to increase subscriptions to WOW
and GCN email newsletters, so don't forget to recommend it to a friend
and claim your reward like Becky.

On offer are free books, ebooks, magazines and subscriptions.
All you have to do is pass on WOW or GCN to a friend or
colleague and tell them to put "Recommended by YOUR NAME"
in the body of the email when they subscribe.  The rewards are:
5 new members - 1 free magazine
10 new members - 3 free magazines
20 new members - a 12 month subscription to Voyage or Colonies
30 new members - 5 free ebooks (value £25/ US$ 38)

You can check it out at http://welcome.to/Regentbooks

Don't forget to send us your letters, questions or responses.

I hope you enjoy this issue.

     Dear Editor  - Payment questions
On average every week I get(and many other editor do too) questions
concerning payment for work submitted, royalties, advances etc.  Here
some of the most common ones which you may find helpful.

     Know Your Rights
Earlier this week I had an apologetic email from a very experienced
internationally published writer.  He had unknowingly sold the world
rights to a story he had also sold the First British to me for.  It can
happen to the best of us, especially with email making world wide sales
so easy.  Are you upto scratch on which rights you can sell where and
when?  Not all editors are as forgiving as me, some would take offence
and you could lose a valuable market forever.

Coming Soon  -  Amanda The True Story - by Tony & Amanda Harrington

This is the story the News of the World turned down for fear of getting sued.
Parental Abuse, rape, torture, Amanda suffered at the hands of every adult male
she came into contact with from the age of 4, her mother even lay in the same
bed as her boyfriend raped Amanda. Then Tony comes on the scene and tries to
bring some stability and love into her life, but that love develops in a way nobody,
least of all Tony and Amanda, expected.  This is the true story, told in often
graphic detail from an abused child's viewpoint. The incompetence of social
services and the police who failed to get the whole story and left her at the
mercy of her mother and her numerous male partners, and how even then the
child lied to protect her mother.
