4 Steps to Getting Your Book Published
1 - Know your market. Don't send a manuscript to a publishing
house that
doesn't buy that kind of book.
2 - Read the kind of books you want to write. If you don't know
what the
editors are buying, you're probably not going to write anything they'll
buy.
3 - Learn your craft and join a professional organization. The
editors will
recognize the difference immediately.
4 - Write because you can't NOT write. This is a very difficult
profession.
Only the obsessive can stand the pain.

Over 22,000 jobs has disappeared in the publishing
over the last year. Some high profile publications
have been closed down (see below) and others have
drastically cut their staff and their freelance budget.
It is a worrying trend for all freelancers as the world
economy, publishing and Internet businesses in particular,
but there is one company that is bucking the trend.
Forgive
the blatant self promotion but here at Regent publications
we have just increased our work force by 60% to cope
with
the demand for our books and magazines.
Over the last six months many of you have asked why your
stories and poems had not been published on time.
This was
entirely due to the unprecedented demand which meant
more
and more of our time was being taken up with production
of already published material rather than generating
new
books and magazines. Hopefully we can now get back
on
schedule.
I hope you enjoy this issue.

The News This Week
------EbookNet.com has folded after new owners Gemstar said it

edited by Robert Walton
has closed ----- The Public Lending Right (PLR) is the
system in the UK which enables
authors to receive payment for the borrowing of their books from public
libraries.
For the last 16 years this applied only to authors resident in the
UK. In
July 2000 the scheme was extended to include all European Economic
Area
authors, including those in Ireland. The amount payable is based on
the
number of times an author's books are borrowed during the year. Authors
are
notified of their earnings in December or January each year, and payment
is
made the following February. The maximum any one author may receive
is
£6000. Earnings of less than £5 are not paid. Irish authors
wishing to
benefit from the scheme must register directly with the PLR in the

Do you send out mailings? Does your ENVELOP stand out?
Here's a few tips to get more of your envelopes opened rather than
binned:
1 - Write something clever on it, like *Postmaster, please
deliver this on (example) April 10, 11, or 12th.*
2 - Hand-write the address?
3 - Purchase attractive postage stamps to catch the recipient's eye?
4 - send your mailings on a day that ensures, as best you
can, they aren't received on a Monday or Friday?
5 - double-check that the recipient's name is spelled correctly?
Every envelope that leaves our offices has a picture of the cover of
one of our books or magazines printed on the back with full address,
telephone number, email address and URL. Not only is it more
likely
to be opened by the recipient, but it will catch the eye of 5 or 6
others who handle it during the postal process.
TIP: If you take the time to make your envelopes look like
something YOU would want to open, they have a better than
average chance of getting opened. The more envelopes that get
opened, the more people see your advertising. And the more people
see your advertising, the more people become your customers.
The
More customers you get, the more advertising you can send out.
Great circle, isn't it?
