Editorial
          Welcome to the 21st Century
Can anyone tell me where I can find a Y2K bug engineer?  No!  Oh, you've noticed it too.  They've
gone into hiding.  I was in a cafe the other day when a voice from another table bellowed across the
          room.
"Hey, yes you, aren't you that millennium bug guy?"
A nervous looking chap in a trench coat and dark glasses spun his head back and forth before
locating the voice's owner. He pointed a finger towards himself.  "Who me? No,no.  You've
mistaken me for someone else. I'm a train driver."
"You sure?" asked the first moving threateningly towards him.
"Sure, sure, I wouldn't know a millenium from a century." And with that he slithered out and sped
away in a gold plated Rolls Royce.
About a year ago, one of those so-called conspiracy theorist claimed there was no such thing as the
millennium bug; that it was just an idea dreamed up by some very slick conmen to swindle lots of
people out of lots of money.  But what do CTs know.

I hope you enjoy the rest of this months newletter.

          Book Reviews
Lords of Iregan - by Sean Brown -
I could not have known when Edward, my half-brother, invited me back to Arandas that it signalled
the culmination of a plan instigated years earlier by the late Lady Christina. Apparently he had
communicated his wish to Mother who passed on the invitation adding her own recommendation that
I should accept. It was she said in my own best interest.

"Over my dead body. I hate him."

"No you don’t. You haven’t seen him since you were a child."

"I have plenty of reasons to remember him only too well."

"Don’t be ridiculous, Helena," Mother tilted her dressing table mirror so that her image loomed at me
through the monitor, and came to her real reason for wanting me to go. "You needn’t think you’re
coming to Earth with Marcus and I - I mean its not that we wouldn’t like you to, but this is the
          proper way of things."

"Don’t waffle on, Mother. At least your first statement was honest."

Marcus was Mother’s latest arm-ornament and he was appalled at the prospect of having a
          grown-up stepdaughter.

"Not at all," Mother said, adoring her perfect bone structure in the mirror. "If only you would make
an effort to get on with Marcus. It wasn’t very nice asking him where he kept his gold detector.
Especially as there is no gold, as you very well know."

I often wondered why Mother was only every honest about the bad things. We had been cruelly
short of cash for months, and now even my monthly allowance, delivered grudgingly from Father’s
estate, had stopped. As far as Father was concerned I was born with two imperfections: I was a girl
and I was Mother’s daughter. After he died I was provided for until my eighteenth birthday, then
nothing. To bare the family name was inheritance enough for a woman.

Still, there was something about Marcus that made it hard for me to believe he loved Mother for love
sake. Perhaps it was the way his big brown eyes glazed over at the mere mention of money or
wealth. Or, to be fair, maybe it was our mutual antipathy that made me willing to believe the worst of
          him.

"I have no wish to impose on either of you. I simply want to go to Earth. Once I’m there, I’ll find a
job and you won’t see me again."

Mother paused from preening herself and spun to face the monitor. "Why Earth?"

As if she didn’t know. Earth was where Robert was. Robert - with whom I had been having a secret
love affair since I was twelve, so secret in fact that even he did not know about it. He was working
as a senator’s aide in Washington, and even though I knew I had no chance of making him fall in
love with me it would be enough to be near him.

"Robert Armstrong. I should have guessed. Ever since he first smiled at you the mention of his name
has made you go weak at the knees. If you never believe another word I say, child, believe me now.
Robert has a posse of beauties surrounding him; you’d need a telescope to see him. Just what hope
do you think you have?" Mother glanced at me once more before turning back to the mirror. "With
the Armstrong’s money and his looks he can take his pick. Rumour has it he already has. You can’t
hope to compete. I’m not being cruel, honestly. I know you won’t believe me, but I just don’t want
          you to get hurt."

Such was touching sentiment from the old witch. She had had custody of me since she and Father
separated, and yet I saw as little of her as I did of him. I lived in an apartment in one of the smaller
Martian settlements with a governess. Every so often mother would turn up with a new husband or
lover, whichever could provide our next meal ticket. By the time Marcus came on the scene she was
a social pariah to any man with a bank account. The lease on this apartment had long since expired.
Mother and Marcus were heading for Earth where apparently his family had connections - though he
was reluctant to mention what in - before the owner could serve an eviction order on them.

Having known Marcus for a little over a month my imagination was working overtime on what his
family connections might be. If it wasn’t for Robert there was no way I would have tried to hitch a
ride with them. But ever since that first ghastly season I spent with the Armstrong’s, after my first
operation, my heart had belonged to Robert. Like many disfigured people I had a bottomless hunger
for physical beauty. Robert, with his genetically manipulated blond hair, handsome features and tall
athletic body, filled that hunger as no one and nothing else could. I had first seen him in the
Armstrong’s viewing lounge shortly after the bandages came off. Pausing as he came in from the light
to the darkened room, from where I was sitting the plains dust blowing off his clothes seemed to
surround him like an aura. At that moment I was lost.

So begins the first chapter of Lords of Iregan and an adventure which sees Helena Iregan return to
the family estate and her despotic half-brother within the Arandas Dome. Slowly she uncovers the
terrible truth about her family history and how they have held onto autocratic power for over ten
generations - not one but several secrets which put her life in peril, threaten the family and spark a
          three sided revolution.

Brown skilfully twists the plot back and forth so that you are never sure right up to the last chapter
who’s on who’s side. But the overriding quality of this story comes through in the interaction
between the characters, particularly Helena and her manic, dilapidated manbot Mortimer, which is "a
drunk’s-skin grey with only three legs, the damaged fourth being weld up out of harms way."

The development of the relationship between them cleverly reflects the way Helena grows from an
emotionally and physically scared kid with a chip the size of Phobos on her shoulder into a beautiful
and sophisticated young woman with a mind of her own.

Underneath this we are left to try to untangle the web Brown weaves of political, social and military
dirty tricks on the part of the three sides vying for control of the dome and the sly dealing of the
power brokers across Mars, on Earth and through out the outer reaches of the Solar System who
think they know the secret of the Iregan’s power and want it for themselves.

What does Helena do with the knowledge as she uncovers each secret? And what role does the
Handsome Robert have in all this?

No I won’t tell, it would spoil the surprise.

Lords of Iregan can be ordered from Regent Publications for £6.99.

Regent Publications Launches new e-book Division
To start the new Millennium independent book and magazine publisher Regent Publications
plans to publish and promote 100 new novels/poetry or short story anthologies/non-fiction
books in electronic format over the coming year.
When news of this new opportunity leaked out prematurely Regent Publications received
thousands of enquiries from interested authors.  Obviously it is going to be very popular
and in great demand from people who are familiar with the quality of Regent publications
printed books and magazines.  However, quality will be an important factor.  There are
plenty of e-book publishers out there already who are ready to produce any old book
regardless of the quality,  but as authors you want to know that your book has been
read; how else can you build a reputation as a writer to be read and make a living from
novels.  After all, as Dr Johnson said 200 years ago:"Nobody but a block head ever wrote
          but for money."
So, to keep the number of possible submissions down to manageable levels Regent Publications
is launching a competition to select those books that will be in the first batch to be produced.
For more information, the rules and an entry form  click on this link and put Regent-e in the subject.

          GUIDELINES FOR CONTRIBUTORS
          Dateline July 21 2299
Mankind has expanded to occupy all the vacant plots in the Solar System. Travelling from Earth to
Mars or the Jovian moons is no more newsworthy than a flight from London to New York or
Melbourne. People still have everyday concerns about mundane things, only the date, place and
scope of human experience are different.

We are looking for Short Stories (1000-10,000 words), speculative features to 3000 words,
speculative news (100-800 words) which will mould the future we are creating. In early issues the
scope of your story is wide open to your own interpretation of what the year 2299 will be like, but
once published these stories will become a part of the ‘history’ which will shape all future issues.
Contributors should familiarise themselves with several issues in order to avoid contradicting stories
which have already been published. In time we will create a future, with a history as complex as that
found in either Star Trek or Babylon 5. But do not be misled by those programmes. In Colonies
there are no warp drives , no transporters, and no jump gate technology. Mankind has yet to voyage
beyond the limits of our own solar system, except for a few deep space probes and space
stations.(although there’s no stopping one or two alien races stopping off here for one reason or
another). All written work should be submitted on spec after careful study of the stories already
published. Artwork should be submitted as samples from which artists can be commissioned to
produce work specifically targeted to a particular story. Colonies has been designed to produce the
sort of stories which might one day form the basis of a new TV epic. It will eventually be
accompanied and promoted by a web site where the stories, environments and characters created
within its pages can be explored and experienced by a world wide audience.

Tips: This is an excellent opportunity to be published - if you adhere to the guidelines and study the
magazine - All but two e-mail submissions in the last month were rejected because the authors had
not bothered to read the type of stories we are publishing.  Another reason for recent rejections has
been authors not checking their science FACTS.  A scientifically accurate story is a pleasure to read,
but if the science is wrong the story becomes nonsense.  If you create new scientific principles or
developments they should be based on sound reasoning, not just that they sound or look good.

          Submission Guidelines

Who We Are: Deep Outside SFFH is a paying professional magazine of SF
and dark imaginative fiction, aimed at people who love to read
well-plotted, character-driven genre fiction. We are interested in
fiction that transcends the limitations and ventures outside the
          stereotypes of genre fiction.

What We Publish: short (1500-4000 words) Science Fiction, Horror,
and darkly imaginative fiction. We seek well-written, professionally
executed fiction, with attention to basics - grammar, punctuation,
usage. We do not accept Sword & Sorcery, pornography, or
excessive violence and gore beyond the legitimate needs of a story.
Also no derivative works (e.g., emulating TV shows and movies - no
          Star Trek stories, for example).

Our goals: We strive to be both writer-friendly and reader-friendly.
We eagerly look forward to receiving top quality, professional
          material from you.

Requirements: All stories must be typed double-spaced, on only one
side of each sheet with sheets loose -- no fasteners of any kind. The
author's full name and address should appear in the upper left-hand
corner of page one; an approximate word count should appear in the
upper right-hand corner. Each page should be numbered and include
the title and author's last name. We will accept letter quality 24-pin
dot-matrix computer print-- please separate the pages. If you choose
to submit photocopies, they must be clear and readable. No
          simultaneous submissions, please.

Grammar, punctuation, spelling, and usage weigh heavily as we
consider the story. You must master these essentials to be a
professional writer. We expect that a professional writer owns, and
regularly uses, a dictionary and at least one or two usage books (e.g.
Strunk & White, Fowler). To be a successful writer, you should be a
voracious but discriminating reader. Many books are available about
the craft of writing -- read them all for free through your public library.
Join a writers' group. Write constantly to improve your craft -- it's a
tough discipline, as difficult and time consuming as learning to play
symphony-quality violin or piano. Visit SharpWriter.Com for a
comprehensive writer's resource. Finally, despite all these somewhat
dire words, we wish you a passionate and successful love affair with
          writing.

We pay three cents per word upon acceptance of your manuscript
for First Serial Rights for one year. Acceptance constitutes final
editorial approval of content. We strive to pay as promptly as
possible, but please allot a reasonable amount of time (6-8 weeks
after acceptance) for your check to arrive.

Manuscripts must be sent by postal mail only. E-mail submissions
will be deleted without being read. Please include an appropriately
sized, self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE). (Contributors
residing outside the United States should use international reply
coupons.) Even if you do not want your manuscript returned, we
require a letter-size SASE for our response; manuscripts without an
          SASE will not be returned.

If you have an e-mail address, please furnish it on your hardcopy.
          Our e-mail address is outside@clocktowerfiction.com.

We usually respond within six weeks after receiving a submission.
Depending on many variables, however, it can sometimes take
longer. Please give us ample time before you begin writing to inquire
about a submission's status. Please do not send us the only copy of
your manuscript (accidents happen and mail gets lost). No
          simultaneous or previously published work.

Authors whose material is published in Deep Outside SFFH (DOSFFH) shall
understand that OSDF has linkage and similar alliances with certain
web enterprises, e.g. Alta Vista's Wild Wild Web, and that the author's
work may at times be featured at or linked from such websites. We at
DOSFFH consider this to be a fair use in that it is authorized by us,
benefits us and our authors in terms of gaining exposure on the Web, and
does not involve a reselling of rights to their intellectual property.
Authors who do not agree with this position should, regrettably, not submit
their work to DOSFFH for publication. Authors who do accept our terms do
in fact agree that such linking and featuring are fair use among the
          rights purchased by DOSFFH.

          Article 1
Writing Travel features for magazines and newspapers world-wide - part 3

One of the most important factors you need to research when looking for markets for your travel
articles is length - not only in terms of wordage, but also the number of pages of percentage of page
covered.  To complicatw matters some publications use a whole range of lengths. If you are planning to        maximise your profits by selling each
article to several different markets world wide it will save you a great deal of time later if you spend a
few hours making a table containing all the publications which use a certain length of travel feature ,
how many photos they use and over how many pages the feature is spread. (Fig.1)
You can break the table down into those that publish features under 500 words, between 500 and
1000 words, 1000-1500 words and 2000 words and above, or any word limits you find most
useful. Some publications will have to be entered twice, three times etc. depending on the range of
features the carry. Experiment with your reference table, include anything you think will be helpful in
saving you time with market research.

destinations, where you can spend money reasonably or lavishly, use a travel agent, airline, cruise
lines, fine cars, fina boats and sports equipment, eat chef-prepared gourmet delights and involve your
family or business associates. There should be plenty to do. mention honeymoon possibilities and
include photos of happy attractive couples enjoying themselves - this point may lead to a second sale
within the group to Bridal Trends magazine. Avoid budget approaches and emphasis professionals
who will take the worry out of your trip. Fantastic photography; make us want to go there with
delicious writing involving all the senses - bring the place to life.
Resorts, health retreats, sports vacations, wilderness or metro areas, spectator as well as
participatory sports if of general appeal, national parks, historic sites. Query the editor about
          specifics of your feature.

Sky Writings is the In-flight magazine of Air Jamaica
At first sight these two magazine are at completely the opposite end of the spectrum. While
Travelogue is big, bright and lavishly illustrated, Sky Writings is thin, only 50 pages, with each page
laid out ina basic 3 column format. Nearly all the photographs used are small (roughly 5x3 CMS)
perhaps indicating that the original quality does not provide for greater enlargement.
Where the two magazines meet is in being produced to meet the needs of specific clients. All of the
bulleted guidelines above could equally apply to Skywritings - be upbeat, encourage the reader to
spend money and present you work professionally. Skywritings may not be your first choice for
