Editorial
Merry Christmas & a happy new Millennium to one and all.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have worked with us, contributed to all of our publications and supported us during the past 12 months. A particular thanks goes out to everyone who waited patiently for their magazines during my recent illness. It will probably take another 3 months before all the publications are back on schedule, but we will get there soon.

Welcome to all the new members who have joined us since the last issue. We now have over 7600 members in 38 countries making us one of the best and most widely subscribed writers organisations in the world.

Our plans for 2000 are well in hand and aimed exclusively at helping talented new writers as well as those who had their first successes and are now looking to expand to become successful. Our latest book - Writing For The World Market - is now available and sell like hot cakes. We took 1098 advanced orders and over the last couple of days we have had the first response in. You can read what others have to say below. Soon you will be able to order all of our products by credit card. We have finally got our merchant account and are in the process of setting up a new website were you can read reviews and selected passages before buying. We are also in the process of setting up Voyage, Colonies and Newswire as emagazines which will make distribution and production easier and cheaper leaving more money to pay you, the writer. The first New Millennium novels competition is now closed and the winners, whose novels will be serialised in NMN, will be announced in the next newsletter. If you have a novel looking for a publisher and would like to see it serialised in NMN we will be starting the second round of selections in the new year. You can get an entry form by sending us an email with NMN in the subject.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regent Publications Launches new e-book Division
To start the new Millennium independent book and magazine publisher Regent Publications
plans to publish and promote 100 new novels/ poetry or short storyanthologies/ non-fiction books in electronic format over the coming year.
When news of this new opportunity leaked out prematurely Regent Publications received
thousands of enquiries from interested authors. Obviously it is going to be very popular and in great demand from people who are familiar with the quality of Regent publications printed books and magazines. However, that quality will be an important factor. There are plenty of e-book publishers out there already who are ready to produce any old book regardless of the quality, but as authors you want to know that your book has been read; how else can you build a reputation as a writer and make a living from your novels. After all, as Dr Johnson said 200 years ago:"Nobody but a block head ever wrote but for money."
So, to keep the number of possible submissions down to manageable levels Regent Publications is launching a competition to select those books that will be in the first batch to be produced.
For more information, the rules and an entry form send an e-mail to john@voyage99.freeserve.co.uk and put Regent-e in the subject.

GUIDELINES FOR CONTRIBUTORS
Dateline July 21 2299
Mankind has expanded to occupy all the vacant plots in the Solar System. Travelling from Earth to Mars or the Jovian moons is no more newsworthy than a flight from London to New York or Melbourne. People still have everyday concerns about mundane things, only the date, place and scope of human experience are different.

We are looking for Short Stories (1000-10,000 words), speculative features to 3000 words, speculative news (100-800 words) which will mould the future we are creating. In early issues the scope of your story is wide open to your own interpretation of what the year 2299 will be like, but once published these stories will become a part of the 'history' which will shape all future issues. Contributors should familiarise themselves with several issues in order to avoid contradicting stories which have already been published. In time we will create a future, with a history as complex as that found in either Star Trek or Babylon 5. But do not be misled by those programmes. In Colonies there are no warp drives , no transporters, and no jump gate technology. Mankind has yet to voyage beyond the limits of our own solar system, except for a few deep space probes and space stations.(although there's no stopping one or two alien races stopping off here for one reason or another). All written work should be submitted on spec after careful study of the stories already published. Artwork should be submitted as samples from which artists can be commissioned to produce work specifically targeted to a particular story. Colonies has been designed to produce the sort of stories which might one day form the basis of a new TV epic. It will eventually be accompanied and promoted by a web site where the stories, environments and characters created within its pages can be explored and experienced by a world wide audience.

Tips: This is an excellent opportunity to be published - if you adhere to the guidelines and study the magazine - All but two e-mail submissions in the last month were rejected because the authors had not bothered to read the type of stories we are publishing. Another reason for recent rejections has been authors not checking their science FACTS. A scientifically accurate story is a pleasure to read, but if the science is wrong the story becomes nonsense. If you create new scientific principles or developments they should be based on sound reasoning, not just that they sound or look good.

Article 1
Writing Travel features for magazines and newspapers world-wide

In no other field of writing is the concept of knowing your market more important than travel writing. So many publications carry travel features - either throughout the year or on a seasonal basis - because of the advertising revenue available that they need to distinguish their features from those of their competitors.

So is this bad news for the freelancer looking to make the maximum sales from a single feature using guerrilla marketing techniques. Not at all, there are only so many ways to present a feature about a particular destination and the key to making those sales is to study your market place very carefully to identify which publications can be grouped together for the same types of feature.

Later we will take a look at some of the newspapers world wide that use short - 100 - 500 word features on travel destinations and which are virtually indistinguishable from one publication to the next. But let's start with the longer- 100 -3000 word features for specialist markets. Many of these specialist markets either have sister publications or there are almost identical publications in other countries. The features are often very similar, even down to the way they are laid out because they are targeted at readers with similar interests and often they pay very good rates.

Australian Flying

EDITOR: Paul Phelan
Address: Yaffa Publishing Group 17-21 Bellevue Street, Surrey Hills, NSW2010. Australia

Circulation: 50k
Frequency: Bi-monthly
Part of the Yaffa Marine Group which consists of 8 titles aimed at a broad cross section of the seagoing public and trade.
Editor Paul Phelan, welcomes freelance contributions of a high standard. "But beware," he says. "I can spot somebody who knows nothing about flying a mile away. It is obvious in the way they write the piece. Even if the author was only a passenger their is a sense of awe in their words that can only come from experiencing flight in a small plane." All test flights and product evaluations are handled in house, but contributions on all destinations and general and technical subjects are acceptable from freelance sources. If you can supply accompanying photographs so much the better but they must be of professional standards. Black & white print or colour trannies are preferred, but occasionally exceptional quality colour prints may be used.
Short news items about flying related events at particular destinations world wide run from 100 - 200 words and do not necessarily need a photograph with them. Longer features run from 600 - 2000 words though most destination pieces are below the 1000 word mark, and Paul likes writing to reflect the fun and enjoyment of flying (e.g.. In a feature about learning to fly a sea plane - "You'll notice that although you're applying quite a bit of power, we not actually moving relative to the bottom. Do you understand the reason for that?" asked the instructor.
"I guess it's because the wind and tide are against us?"
"Wrong. It's because we're stuck on a bloody sand bar. You'll have to get out and push.")
Most destinations covered tend to be in the more exotic parts of Australia/New Zealand - the outback, Snowy Mountains etc. - but they occasionally cover other parts of the world. Try to tie in some local historical or interesting character information. Provide details of where you can stay overnight (address, telephone No, e-mail) and if possible a map.
Response time 1 month.
Payment: £100 - £200 /1000 words (US$165 - 330)

Pilot is an independent magazine published by the pilot publishing Company Limited

The similarity between these two magazine from opposite side of the world goes much deep than just look alike covers. Pilot carries the same types of news items on the first few pages, although there are many more of them and they cover gliders, jets, balloons and helicopters as well as single engine planes.
Editor James Gilbert says: "We welcome freelance work, indeed, the entire magazine is written by freelance contributions, but we have an extensive set of guidelines available from the editorial office which must be adhered to. Make sure that all submissions are accompanied by captioned or labelled prints or transparencies or other illustrations."
Each issue contains one or two destination piece of upto 2000 words and illustrated with up to 12 photographs a map and two side bars, one with information about local flying clubs, airports and rental prices and the other with general tourist and accommodation information.
Your feature should not be too technical, being aimed as much at the interested non-flier as the pilot. Often the author will have chartered on of the local tourist flights rather than piloted himself so it is a slot perfectly suited to all travel writers. If you do charter a flight make sure to include all rental prices and offer an assessment of the flight operators.
Paul wants all submitted work in hard copy with an accompanying disk in ASCII. Response time 60 days. Payment £125 (US$200) per printed page text or photos.

purpose of enhancing the quality of what appears on the great silver screen.
Working with Voyageur Film Corp. and KPE Films, we feel that we might very well be able to direct the new
and undiscovered screenwriter in discovering the path to the threshold of success and recognition. In
simpler words...place your script directly into the hands of the persons in charge of acquiring new properties.
VOYAGEUR FILM CAPITAL CORP.
Voyageur Film Capital Corp. develops, produces, distributes, and finances profitable and thought-provoking theatrical films, Movies of The Week and television entertainment. The Company is an emerging force in the Western Canadian film and television marketplace. Bringing together the diverse and complementary talents of strong, independent producers, directors and writers, the Company is well positioned to expand its production in both the television and feature film marketplace. In a recent merger with a private production company, Voyageur's will now have a slate of over 20 projects. And for what it's worth...though the company seeks quality first, and genre second, we have noticed they truly appreciate the appeal of family oriented, broad-based film
entertainment.
KPE FILMS
KPE Films is the film division of a much larger company with a client list that includes: NEW LINE CINEMA, WARNER BROTHERS, DISNEY, INDUSTRY ENTERTAINMENT, DAILY VARIETY, SHOWTIME, INDEPENDENT PICTURES, and OPRAH WINFREY SHOW.

Why a 'Screenwriters Presentation Opportunity'?
In all fairness, we feel that we cannot really refer to this process by definition as a 'contest' in the true sense of the word. There aren't any cash prizes, no single free trip to Hollywood or any awards. Instead, you will be presented with the very real opportunity of having your script read by professional representatives of high profile, award winning production companies. This is an excellent opportunity for everyone involved, so let's do it right. Proper format, property protection, trust and mutual respect are crucial.

HOW THE PRESENTATION PROCESS WORKS:
A very simple process. Read the guidelines. Send Red Inkworks your material for consideration. We will read your material and send you our comments. If your material is suitable, we will contact the production companies professional representative and pass along your material. At this point you will be required to sign a standard release form.
