Why should you enter competitions?
I know, we asked the same question last issue and came to
the conclusion that even being a runner up can gain you massive
publicity. That's aside from any financial benefits you might
get.
Another question worth asking is what is the motivation of the organisers
to run the competition? To make money ? To gain Publicity
? To
increase their subscriber base?
You can forget the first one. With a dozen competition under our
belts
we have never even broke even on the entry fees for our competitions
and I don't know of any other publisher who has either?
Certainly to increase publicity and the subscriber base are important
factors for all organisers, but there is another factor which we consider
important - to help writers achieve everything THEY hope for in
their writing careers, be that fame and fortune or recognition of the
quality of their writing by their peers and the general reading public.
In all our competitions we aim to achieve this and we are happy to
announce that Sam Smith from Bradford on Tone, England who
was one of the winners of the first New Millennium Novels
Competition has been nominated for the Booker Prize - one
of the top 5 prizes for writing in the world with a substantial cash
prize and recognition of his undoubted quality.
We hope to follow this success with many more and look forward
to the day when many of you gain the recognition you deserve
through our competitions.

Feature: Print Vs Online
As little as two years ago I remember reading
somewhere, in fact,
everywhere that online publications barely
paid and were not really
the place for writers of any merit to place
their work.
Today the situation has changed. In common
with everything
Internet related the rewards for writers are
often greater than
those offered by traditional print magazines.
It's all a matter of advertising and sponsorship
revenue. As more
companies come online the need for advertising
space grows, the
more income that online publications have
to pass onto contributors.
There is also a growing trend for newsletters
and zines like this one
to charge a subscription price. Take
Global Writers Ink
http://www.inkspot.com/global/
which provides similar information (although
far less of it) to our
own Writers Open Workshop, but they
charge $12.95 a year for
12 issues compared to WOW's 24 issues.
A new Ezine called 'Write' is due to launch
at the start of next month
providing general monthly how to write type
features, market news
stories and poems. The first four issues
are free then there will be a
subscription due.
Is this good and bad of writers? The
information you have
been getting for free will increasingly cost
a subscription. But there
will be more paying gigs. The boundary
between print and electronic
publications will become increasingly blurred
as they cease to be
different and become simply alternative methods
of delivering the
same product.
In the long run this is bound to be good news
for both the writer
and the publisher. Many excellent magazines
have failed simply
because printing costs make it financially
impossible to continue
running a magazine which does not turn in
a profit within the first
few issues. Dead publications at best
mean fewer markets for
your work and at worst mean not getting paid
for work you have
already had printed.
Being able to deliver a larger proportion of
your subscriptions
electronically means lower printing costs,
no delivery costs
and less waste - thus magazine survival rates
improve providing
more paying markets for your work and increasing
payment rates.
That's the publishers view, but what do you
