As
I'm sure you know, many of the asteriods are made up of the material
that was left over when the planets formed; nickle and iron mostly, with
small amounts of heavier metals, including gold. The first hint that
there might be rocks out there made up largely or wholly of gold or other
precious metals was in 2159 when astrogeophysicists observed reletively
small asteriods causing unexplained perterbations in the orbits of
much larger asteriods when their orbits came close together
