These two characters went through a lot during the game including,
At the end of Disc 1, notice Rinoa's expression when Squall get struck by the Edea's Ice Strike. There was a look of fear on her face, since she was afraid he'll die.
Notice during their "date" on Disc 2, Rinoa said that if Squall needs someone to talk to, she'll be there waiting.
When Rinoa slipped into a coma on Disc 3, Squall was pleading and begging that Rinoa will wake up. He also admitted on that disc that he had fallen for her.
Also on Disc 3, Squall ,with being convinced by his friends, went to rescue Rinoa before she could be sealed away forever. Notice, when they embraced, it looks like Rinoa is crying.
Squall promised Rinoa that even though she became a sorceress, he'll protect her even if the whole world will try to kill her.
At the ending cinema, Squall slips into a coma due to over-exertion. Rinoa finds him but he isn't breathing. Its like he's dead. Tears were streaming down her face. However, she used her powers inadvertantly, to rearrange time and Squall was revived.
