.  ....... Augmented &
Extended lphabets

  • All phonemic alphabets are

  • augmented or extended

Since they contain more than 26 phonograms or sound-signs, all Indo-European phonemic alphabets are augmented or extended.  This is usually done rather conventionally with familiar digraphs.  On the right is an example of one such alphabet. The only additional consonant is [zh].  Sometimes the two [th] sounds in [thy thigh] are distinguished. Most of the additional phonograms in the GP-correspondence table are for vowels.  The traditional alphabet tries to get by with 5 but there are 14 pure vowel sounds. The use of digraphs is not ideal so various suggestions have been made to invent new symbols such as the following suggestion to replace [sh] and [th].

Michael Avinor advocates using new characters instead of digraphs, upper case letters, or diacritics. Such devices are aesthetically offensive.

Here is a phonemic transcription in Unifon, a writing system that uses capital letters rather than digraphs to distinguish sounds.

The 48 letter alphabet for 42 phonemes
26 letters are not enough and three of the tradtiional letters are redundant. The problem letters are the 20  vowels, semi-vowels, and  diphthongs.

     42 letter alphabet for Spanglish

The usual argument against the Saxon alphabet is that English speakers will not use [ai] for eye or [eis] for ace.  English tends to be logographic [one spelling per word] rather than phonographic [one spelling per sound].  The alphabet above is a phonographic alphabet, there is a symbol [letter or letter combination -  sometimes two] for every sound and these symbols are not used to reference other sounds.  In this system [cou] cannot be spelled [cow] becuase that letter combinations is used in [rowing] .
The w distinguishes rows [a plural] from roaz. coz = cawz where o is the short o and aw is the long o in tawt. sauerkraut = sourkrout  allow=alau.

These are all rather arbitrary distinctions to handle words that were historically pronounced quite different than we pronounce them today.

bayou=baayu.  Usually pronounced  "by you"  = bai yu

In Camelot, words were pronounced the way they were spelled.  This is quasi mythical because English words were never pronounced exactly the same in all regions.  However, the regional difference would often turn up in the way these dialects of English were written.  [bury] was spelled that way because it was not pronunced [berry].  bury is not one of the words that have to be respelled since if were pronounced as it is spelled, it would still be understood in context.  [All] on the other hand, is a good candidate for respelling because it should rhyme with [shall].

There are a few letters that cannot be given a single interpretation.  o is ah or awe.  Spanglish uses the double consonant to indicate the short [aa] sound in pot.

Thus [small] used to be pronounced smaal so it would be corect to spell this pronunciation smoll.  [all] is an irregular spelling because it does not rhyme with [shall].  [under untill unity]  what is the difference in the two [un] spellings.  [unnder, antill, iunity/yuunity] would be the Spanglish spellings.  [antill] looks like [annthil]   but the stress is different.

Masha Bell: The cost of traditional spelling
The book expands Masha's leaflet: Why Improve English Spelling

Other books on spelling improvement acknowledge the inconsistencies and irregularities
in the traditionial system. Quite often they do not recognize the underlying regularities.
And they do not advance a concept of systematic spelling that would provide a model
for correct spelling.  Exceptions to the existing rules should be eliminated.

I want to work from a pronunciation guide spelling to historical or traditional spelling.

Pronunciation Guide Writing
What is the value of learning tradtional letter names?
In other languages, one learns letter sounds with an i or e added to pronounce consonants.
ah beh seh deh eh efe ...  Perhaps only marginally [maarjinaly] better.
We can change the sound of a with R and W and L.  ormy wont ol become army want and all
water = waater or wauter.  ao = a-ring

Diacritics  as a solution.  This is the Webster solution.  Also used by E.V. Graff in 1881.
ae aa a:  a-bar ei, a.=o
a = neutral sound

Phonologists are interested in the answers to five questions:
Abstract segments of sound are called phonemes

1. Which segements are meaningful
2. How are they represented at the covert level
3. How are they permitted to combine to make syllables and words
4. How are they described at the overt level
5. By what rules at the covert level is the overt level derived.

Obstruents [true consonants] can be voiced or voiceless
Non obstruents include  nasals, liquids[ laterals, rhotic], glides w and y with w twice listed as bilabial-velar.
mn ng l r ... w y   h = voiceless glottal,  24 total 22 uncombined + glottal stop.+ hw
They are produced by some narrowing of the vocal tract but not enough to casue friction.
frictionless continuants and sonorants.

1.  Have to teach two alphabets
2.  Have to provide a complete alphabet
Hav tu provaid a compliet aelfabet.
3.  Hav tu indiceit stress on  indicaet
4.  Letters that can be controversial are in red.
The red letters indicate sound signs that are in dispute.
An alphabet has to have at least 40 symbols, 22+ consonants, 17+ vowels. 14 pure + 3 diphthongs
