ActiveSync and Command Line Switches

Did you know that you can actually use the command line (Start-> Run) on your desktop to open Outlook and ActiveSync.  Refer to the following table for a list of actions that are possible via the command line.  Please note that some of the switches need your mobile device to be connected to your Desktop.

Microsoft ActiveSync

Command

Action
Wcesmgr.exe Start ActiveSync manager (if necessary) without displaying the status window.
Wcesmgr.exe /syncnow Start ActiveSync manager (if necessary) and synchronize data immediately.
Wcesmgr.exe /show Start ActiveSync manager (if necessary) and make the ActiveSync status window visible.
Wcesmgr.exe /syncmgr Start ActiveSync manager (if necessary) and display the ActiveSync Options dialog.
Wcesmgr.exe /quit Shut down ActiveSync manager while keeping connection active.  Whenever you run Wcesmgr.exe again, it will synchronize your data again.  This action is similar to physically disconnect and reconnect the device.
Wcescomm.exe Start the ActiveSync Connection Manager.  This runs in the background in the system tray and synchronizes your mobile device with your desktop computer.  To check if this application is running on your system, press CTRL + ALT + DEL and view the process list.
CeAppMgr.exe This opens up the Application Manager that takes care of installing and uninstalling a program to your mobile device.  It is usually provided with a .ini file as a parameter by the software attempting to install/uninstall to identify the location where the files must be extracted.
Dbexport.exe /import This will open the import dialog box to select the MS Access database that you would like to import to your Pocket PC.

Microsoft Outlook

I recommend you to refer to the following Microsoft Office 2003 site.  Please note that some of the switches are not available in the older versions of Microsoft Outlook.

If you receive an error while running the command line entry, then you need to provide the path of the file as well.  Example:

"E:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\WCESMgr.exe" /show
