ActiveSync Cannot Open COM Port

If you are using a Bluetooth connection to synchronize your Pocket PC with the computer, you might encounter the following screens at startup.

If you attempt to synchronize the Pocket PC after clicking No in the above dialog, it synchronizes successfully.  The most probable cause for these messages are that your the COM port that ActiveSync is using is getting blocked by some other application upon startup.  I have had success in eliminating these messages by doing the following:

  1. Click Start -> Run and type

    Command

Click Ok and it should open a DOS window.

  2. Type the following on the command line:

    set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

    and hit Enter.

  3. Now type:

    devmgmt.msc

and hit Enter.  This should open up the Device Manager.

  4. Click the View menu -> "Show hidden devices" in Device Manager and you should be able to see devices that are not connected to the computer. If you notice any grayed out COM port entry for the COM port that ActiveSync is using, then right-click and uninstall the ports as shown in the screen shots below.  In the following example, ActiveSync is using COM 7 for communication.  Notice the ghost entry for COM7 as indicated by the red arrow.

Uninstall the ports and then reboot the computer.
