The Cross Vermont Trail is proposed to generally follow the available sections of the Montpelier & Wells River Railroad between Lanesboro and Fairmont (East Montpelier). However, the precise route of the trail through Marshfield Station has not been determined at this time!

Topographic map of Marshfield

Gate across the trail just west of Marshfield Station. Digital photograph by Kenyon F. Karl on Sept. 25, 1999.
A gate blocks the railroad bed (RR Track West) a short distance west of the presumed location of Marshfield Depot. The red sign on this gate proclaims that the old rail bed is not a public bicycle path west of this point!
Two gravel roads connect Marshfield Depot with the village settlement. Upper Depot Road is the short but steep route, while the somewhat longer Lower Depot Road has a more gentle grade. Depot Street is a paved street that continues north from the lower intersection of these two gravel roads to the intersection of Route 2 within the Marshfield settlement.
It is not clear whether the old railroad bed (RR Track East) east of this point is open for public use. Trail users are thus advised to travel east then south on lightly used town roads that roughly parallel the railroad bed to Bailey Pond. At that point, a camp road continues east on the railroad bed past the end of Marshfield Pont (Edgewater) to Lanesboro.
No trail facilities were observed in the vicinity of Marshfield Depot. The following facilities are available in the village settlement at the bottom of the long steep hill!

The Rainbow Bakery & Cafe is located in the village at the foot of Depot St at the
intersection of Route 2 (the main street of the settlement). Toilets & water
are presumably available upon request. Restaurant hours:
Wed & Thu 10 am to 5 pm for Lunch & Sweets
Fri & Sat 9 am to 5 pm for Lunch & Sweets
Fri & Sat 5 pm to 8:30 pm for Dinner & Pizza
Sun 9 am to 3 pm for Lunch & Sweets

A general store is located in the village just north of the end of Gilman Street,
which branches off at the midpoint of Depot Street to run northeast along the
river to Route 2. Sandwiches and beverages are available on a take-out basis. A
second convenience store and a post office are in adjacent buildings.
