SOUTH HERO, VT - The South Hero Recreation Path Committee is holding the 1^st in a series of public meetings Tuesday, January 2^nd at 7:30 at the Folsom School on South Street.  The committee is seeking input for the design and use of the railbed from Martin Road to "the cut", and to points north and south.

 

"The cut" is a 200-foot gap in the 3 1/2 mile long railroad causeway built across Lake Champlain between South Hero and Colchester 100 years ago in 1900.  The Colchester section is now a spectacular bike path with a new connection to Burlington by way of a unique bicycle-and-pedestrian ferry across the Winooski River, established last fall.

 

A second ferry connecting South Hero and Colchester is among the possibilities to be discussed Tuesday.  Last summer, two one-day demonstration crossings were very popular with the hundreds of bicyclists who welcomed the opportunity to bike across the lake between Grand Isle and Chittenden Counties.
