Topo map from TopoZone Web Site USGS Topographic map of Rendering Plant Switch

The trail crossing at Leddy Park must be close to Rendering Plant Switch. Digital Picture by Kenyon F. Karl on July 25, 1999.

The topographic map suggests that the large parking area at Leddy Park apparently replaced an old 'rendering plant' at this location that was large enough to justify its own railroad siding. The sidewalk crossing of the trail leads downhill to a relatively new year-around ice arena. Further down a set of stairs from the arena is a public beach.

Shore Road crossing a short distance northwest is typical of the relatively few residential street crossings on the trail. Digital Picture by Kenyon F. Karl on July 25, 1999.

Trail access is available at:

Ample free parking is available in the parking lot adjacent to the trail at Leddy Park, although that lot may be full during important games and similar events at the year-around Ice Arena.

The Leddy Ice Arena building just down the hill from the rail-trail contains a refreshment stand with a limited food menu. Public toilets and water fountains are also available. These facilities may be available only when the building is used for practice sessions or public events. A picnic area overlooks the beach on the west side of the Ice Arena building, and a small beach (free) is available just down a wooden stairway.

A major grocery store is located in the Ethan Allen Shopping Center, just northwest of the northeast end of the driveway that enters Leddy Park from North Avenue. Toilets and water are presumably available upon request in the grocery store.

North Beach Campground is about a mile southeast of Rendering Plant Switch offering a city-operated picnic area, public swimming, and a campground. Toilets and water are presumably available at the bathhouse on a seasonal basis. A fee may be charged to enter the rail-trail using beach access road from North Street. Note that toilet buildings within the campground are restricted to campers only!

CCTA North Avenue (N) Bus runs on the roughly parallel North Avenue, perhaps a quarter-mile to a half-mile away. Stops must be located near the northeast ends of:
