We want to keep you, our supporters, abreast of what the ECGA/NH State Committee has been doing over the last few months.   We are persevering and moving ahead in our effort to build the East Coast Greenway in seacoast NH.  Below is an account of some of our doings.  Your interest, inputs and comments are welcome.  We would like to hear from you.  Send us a return note or e-mail us anytime.

East Coast Greenway Designated a National Millenium Trail

This past June, the U.S. Dept of Transportation designated the East Coast Greenway as a "National Millenium Trail."  A total of sixteen trails were designated, including the ECG.  We are in the company of such trails as the Appalachian Trail, Freedom Trail, Hatfield-McCoy Trail, Pacific Crescent Trail, Iditarod Trail, Underground Railroad, Great Western Trail, Mississipi River Trail, American Discovery Trail and six others.  The purpose of the Millenium Trails is to spark the creation and enhancement of trails across the nation as part of America's legacy of the future.  Greenways, Linear Parks, Bike Paths, whatever we call them, we realize the benefits of these trails for both recreation, transportation, conservation, economic development and improving the quality of life in our communities.  Our goal here in NH is to keep that spark alive and build the greenway.

November 30, 1999 ECGA/NH State Committe Meeting

ECGA Millenium Tour [Summer 2000]

The NH ECGA State Committee met at the Lane Library in Hampton.  From the October 1999 meeting we discussed the proposed Millenium Tour planned for Summer '2000.  The East Coast Greenway Alliance/ECGA plans to sponsor a bicycle tour along the general route of the ECG beginning in Florida and meeting a Canadian group near Calais, ME.  Every state committee along the route is planning an event supporting the tour as it passes through each state.  The core group (thru cyclists) of the Millenium Tour is expected to be 10 cyclists with groups of escort cyclists joining the core group within their respective state.  Various options and ideas were discussed from (a) State Police escort for core cyclist group (b) Local Police on Bikes escorting core group (c) Sponsoring a Youth Bicycle Rodeo near the route (d) Mini-Fair at Prescott Park and a (e) Walking Clubs and Equestrian Group traversing part of the Abandoned Rail Corridor in Hampton/Hampton Falls which is proposed as part of NH/ECG, to name a few.

NH ECGA Powerpoint Presentation

Krystina Deren Arrain created a Powerpoint presentation on the NH East Coast Greenway that will be used as an educational and promotional tool.  The committee reviewed and evaluated the presentation.  Suggestions were made which Krystina has incorporated in the presentation.

Name, Name.....What's In A Name?

Although our Greenway will become part of the East Coast Greenway network, this NH Greenway needs its own name -- a name that identifies it with NH, especially seacoast NH.  It was suggested that we conduct a contest to give the Greenway a name.   That is a good idea and we will pursue this suggestion in the future.  I would add that we are open to suggestions.  Matter of fact, we welcome them.  So if you have an idea or ideas for the Greenway name, forward it to us for consideration.  Come on now, put on those thinking caps!

Reaching out to our Communities

Krystina Arrain gave a presentation introducing the NH/ECG project to the Seabrook Board of Selectmen on December 28th.  The Seabrook Selectmen were supportive of the ECG project.  She also gave a presentation to the Seabrook Conservation Commission on January 24th which also was favorably received.  Henry Boyd of the Commission indicated that a Salisbury, MA town planner is very interested in developing a greenway/trail on the Massachusetts portion of the abandoned rail corridor and joining at the NH border in Seabrook.  On February 10th, Krystina Arrain will give the NH/ECG presentation at the luncheon meeting of the Portsmouth Rotary Club.  A large and very active organization, the Portsmouth Rotary Club is supportive of community projects.  Our next effort will be to give a presentation to North Hampton town government and community groups in either March or April.

 Don't be a Stranger!

Building the NH East Coast Greenway is your project.  We want to hear from you, even just to let us know that you support our efforts.  As always suggestions are welcome.  Visit the East Coast Greenway Alliance website at www.greenway.org.  The 17-miles of the NH/ECG is an important resource to NH citizens and all its visitors, but it will also become part of a bigger picture--one that reaches from Maine to Florida.
