On September 13, about 25 Springfield College students, faculty, and staff participated in a clean-up of the HDRT corridor between Watershops Pond and Allen Street, and south of Allen Street between Daviston and Wayne Streets.
The effort was a part of Humanics in Action Day at the college, when Springfield College makes an effort to improve the quality of life in Springfield. The corridor received much needed attention, as participants disposed of unsightly and sometimes dangerous trash including used needles (properly attended to by on site emergency medical technicians), and cut weeds and brush that invited criminal activity and vagrancy.
Although the area is posted as a "no dump" area by the city, this sort of clean-up was clearly not being done on a regular basis by anyone else.
On September 20, Friends of the HDRT Co-President Susan Joel attended a meeting of the LaBroad Neighborhood Council to update them on the progress of the trail proposal. She discussed the design work that has been done so far and encouraged council members to get involved by speaking with their neighbors about the project and distributed information and bumperstickers. Look for the new "I Support the Highland Division Rail Trail" bumperstickers around town and in the Goodwill window at the "X’ and call 827-0852 if you’d like to have one yourself!
On September 18, City Planner Linda Petrella hosted a meeting at Holy Cross School in East Forest Park for individuals whose property would abut the proposed rail trail. On hand were design engineers Dave Chapell and Bill Paley, who showed residents the trail’s design, which is near completion.
Trail neighbors had the opportunity to request additional design modifications, such as increased screening, fencing, or other security measures, as well as express their concerns about the trail in general to learn more about the process.
Another meeting of a "working group" of trail proponents and opponents is scheduled for November to review the modifications made in trail design.
The Friends of the HDRT meet every 3rd Thursday of the month at the "X" Goodwill in Springfield. Please join us!
