Long abandoned rails and ties were discovered under the trees at the Old Turnpike Road crossing at the south edge of the Townsend State Forest in Townsend, MA, in the course of a spot check of the Mason Rail Trail on July 15, 1998. A similar discovery was made at the presumed location of the West Townsend depot at the Route 119 crossing. These conditions were confirmed during a very quick recheck in the early evening of July 7, 2000.

Note that this potential trail would connect with the currently open Mason Rail-trail at the New Hampshire State Line and continue south alongside and through the Townsend State Forest. It would then cross the Squannacook River to reach the site of the West Townsend Depot, and turn southeast to roughly parallel the south side of Route 119 towards Townsend.
