Cowboy Poetry
BILLY THE STRAY
By Fred Engel
He wandered into our camp one day,
Not long after he'd just run away,
He was tired and alone and hungry, I'd say,
Just a pitiful lookin' little ol' stray,
And he wore no socks, 'cause he had no shoes,
His pony was thin and worn out too,
And he looked kinda sad when he looked at you
He asked "Who's the ramrod here, 'cause I'm
Looking for work?"
And you could tell by lookin' that he was tired,
and full of hurt.
Then the boss said "What's your name, son,
And what can you do?
And give me a good reason,
Why I should hire you."
He said "my real name's William,
But I'm never called that.
Most folks call me Billy, and I'm used to it.
I know some about horses and can throw a rope.
And if I'm hired on with you boys,
I'll be a good cowpoke."
So the boss said "O.K. Billy, I'll let you stay.
But the work is hard and makes a long day.
So pull your own weight earn your pay.
'Less you'd rather remain just a little ol' stray.
You can start by helping Cookie,
and gather him some wood.
Then help round up the horses,
If you think you could."
And with that job description, if you will,
The boss hired on our young stray Bill.
And as the days went on we all taught him things
And found him some old boots,
and a pair of old jeans.
We taught him to load the wagon,
And to hitch up the team,
And we had him sort all the rocks,
Out of the beans.
And we taught him things that should be known
By all young cowboys not yet fully grown.
We taught hime to rope and to dally up tight
When his loop caught steer that was full of fight.
And when the cattle got spooked,
And need quieted down,
We'd call Billy to help since we had him around.
And he still makes livin' by chasin' a cow,
And he's been with us, I guess,
'Bout 20 years now.
