Chuck Operates AO-27 with Arrow Antenna & HT
Here is Chuck, KI0AG, on Mt. Elbert
in Colorado. At 14,433 feet it is the highest mountain in Colorado. The
trail to the top is five miles long, and rises 4,400 feet. This day on the
two AO-27 passes 17 stations were
contacted. Two simplex QSOs were made, including one to Colorado Springs
more than 60 miles away. The 4 pound station consisted of an Arrow II Satellite Antenna
and a Yaesu FT-530 with the 7.2 Volt extended life 1.7AHR pack for 3w output
power to the uplink on 145.85mhz. Chuck's downlink signal on AO-27
Satellite was 436.8mhz.
WB6FZH/KH6 QSO- On July 18, 1998 on the mid-morning AO-27 pass
(local time), I worked Chuck while he was on nearby 14,000 foot Mt. Lincoln
(DM-69). It was an exciting and memorable satellite pass for me, I also
contacted Chris/N2YQP(DM-65) in New Mexico. Other stations on the pass
were California stations: WA6OEM/Mike(CM-70), KF6BSL/Tom(DM-04) and
N6EMP/Brent(DM-06).
I hope this story will encourage others to take portable equipment to the
great outdoors and share the adventure with others through the magic
of Amateur Radio. Members of the Adventure Radio Society often take their
small battery powered HF radios to locations that range from
snow-covered mountain-tops to the seashore.
