USS DEVILFISH Log Two- Captain Jenkins-With crew and provisions aboard, the boat makes way for deep sea. I still do not know the nature of this mission. USMC Commander Joe is aboard with his crack unit and their supplies. We are about to open our order envelopes aboard the Sub. P1- XO Riley-"Commander, I hope you're not claustrophobic." Joe-"This thing is a damn sewer pipe."
P2- USS Devilfish makes for deep sea.
P3-Jenkins-"Well, here it is and it doesn't look good for you guys. Intelligence reports that the enemy has a possible hidden airbase on a small island north of Luzon, at these coordinates. They keep getting our long-range bombers on their bombing missions. Air recon has failed to find the enemy airfield due to the thick jungle, and hidden AA positions. Enemy warships are also reported in the area. An invasion group and a battle group are rerouted for a massive strike on Luzon."
P4- Jenkins-"The only way to find the enemy base is to put your marines ashore. Once on land you are to recon the jungle and find the enemy base." Joe- "Finding the enemy will not be a problem for me and my men, but the defenses may be to spread out for my small group alone." Jenkins- "Commander, all you have to do is to find the enemy base, give the position and coordinates info back to the Devilfish. We will do the rest, but you must neutralize the shore batteries and punch a nice big hole in their airfield to keep them from launching a counter attack on the sub."
P5-Jenkins-"According to the geographies on this island code named " S," there is a lagoon on the far side and a river that goes inland. This is a perfect landing and extraction point for your men. If you guys fail in knocking out those targets, there maybe no sub to comeback to." Engineering Officer- "Sir, shall we test her out?"
P6-Dive Officer-"Commander, boat rigged for dive, ready on your order" Jenkins-" Dive the boat!" Arruga, Arruga! "Dive Dive!"
P7- Jenkins-"So Joe, you think your guys can pull this off?" Joe-"I think we may have a heavy causality rate, but my men are well trained and experienced. Some of them are veterans from the Makin Island raid, but I never did like blind dates."
P8-Jenkins -"Maintain, periscope depth." DO-"Aye, Aye Skipper!"
P9-Captain-"Up Scope!"
F10-Dive Officer-" Give zero on the bubble. " Crew- "Aye, Aye Sir."
P10 -One Week later, Devilfish running on the surface at 22 knots on diesels is entering hostile waters. Captain to Joe.- "That's all we can do at this speed, from now on we will submerge and run on our electric motors by day and surface diesels by night, so we can recharge our batteries. The sub is to much of a sitting duck on the surface in broad daylight." Joe -"How fast can we go under water?" Captain -"Ten knots if we push it, but it will drain our batteries at a higher rate."
P11-DO-"Ok, shut down your engines chief. Close all induction lines, we're going down."
P12- Chief-"All four diesels are turned off, induction lines closed, valves closed, all green on the Xmas tree. Take her down."
