From "History of Albemarle County in VA" by Rev. Edgar Woods -- In 1759 William bought from Thomas Fitzpatrick nearly 500 acres on the south fork of the Hardware, not far from Jumping Hill. The same year he obtained a patent for nearly 200 acres on the north fork of the Hardware and acquired near by upwards of 700 more, all of which he sold in 1782 to Col. John Old. In 1777 he purchased from Dr. James Hopkins about 1500 acres on the waters of the Totier.
