At the turn of the century people from Ukraine started settling in the Stenen district. Ukrainians of Orthodox faith strived to have a place to worship. Before they could accomplish this, services were held in halls, schools and private homes whenever priests visited the area. In later years a residence was provided in Arran for the clergy. Priests that resided there were Rev's: L. Diachina, M. Bodnarchuk, J. Mayba, K. Zeliskewich and F. Leheniuk. On October 6, 1946 after
a service in Stenen Hall, a meeting was held. A motion was passed
to build a church. An executive was elected of: In February 1946 the congregation became a member of the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church of Canada. As funds became available purchasing of material began and members donated money and material. In 1954 the building of the church was begun with John Baron as the main carpenter; countless hours of volunteer labour was put in by members. On May 13, 1956 the first service in church was held with Rev. F. Leheniuk serving. The congregation grew and membership fees increased as the need arose. Other priests which were assigned to serve the congregation were P. Zubrytsky and H. Kryshtanowich. In 1961 the installation of the ikonostas was completed. On June 24, 1962 the blessing of the church took place with Metropolitan Ilarion of Winnipeg and the parish priest Rev. S. Hredil. Religious and cultural teaching was not neglected. Sunday and Ukrainian language classes were held for children. First classes were held on July 20, 1953 with Mrs. Hladun, teacher. Later Mr. & Mrs. Hutzel, K. Hunko, A. Kowalchuk, M. Kurkowsky, Nellie Koroluk, K. Doroschuk and Lillian Steranko since 1968. A choir was formed to sing at church services and perform at concerts and programs. M. Ochitwa was the first director, then Rev. Leheniuk, Rev. Chrustawka, Mrs. Shadursky and Lillian Steranko. On November 8, 1952 under the guidance of Rev. & Mrs. Zeliskewich, a women's organization was formed as a branch (Kniahynia Olga branch name) of the Ukrainian Women's Association of Canada. They help the congregation in upkeeping the church, support Ukrainian organizations, institutions and youth camp which is located at Crystal Lake. |
