The Endeavour area was opened for settlement in the fall of 1907. With settlement came the need for a church. Prior to 1942-43, the people attended Rus'ki Pravoslavni churches: St. Demetrious at Lady Lake, built in 1911, St. Mary's west of Endeavor, built in 1919, and St. John's north of Endeavor, blt in 1924. In 1940 a congregation was organized in Endeavour. Services were held in the St. James Anglican church in town and the congregation proceeded to collect money to build a church. The executive was elected of: Chairman: Lukian Cherwick, Secretary: Peter Sturbey, Treasurer: Alex Wiwcharuk In 1941 Pete Lewchuk and Lukian Cherwick were chosen as contractors for lumber. The logs were cut at Dorosh's and Pelechaty's. In 1942 the building of the church began using mostly volunteer labour. It was built in the form of a cross. Pete Lewchuk was the supervising carpenter for the construction. The decision was made to name the church after all the saints, to honour all the saints who helped to preserve the Orthodox faith. On April 2, 1942 our congregation was accepted and became a part of the Ukrainian Greek-Orthodox Church of Canada. Rev. M. Bodnarchuk conducted the first three services and Rev. W. Aponiuk then continued until 1946. Rev. S. Mayba, from Arran, served until 1950. Then a change in boundaries took place and Endeavour was transferred to the Hudson Bay Parish. The priests that served the congregation came from Melfort, Sheho, Hudson Bay, Canora and Arran. In 1952 the congregation purchased a bell and built a bellfry. 1984 was the biggest event the congregation embarked upon, in a major renovation of the church interior and exterior. A new ikonostas was completed, and an extension added to the church for extra space for a larger choir loft and porch (vestibule). The following priests have served the congregation: Reverends Bodnarchuk, Aponiuk, Stratychuk, Kwasnytsky, Prystupa, Shwetz, Melnychuk, Vitenko, Hredil, Puk, Chrustawka, Shadursky, Krywych, Stefaniuk, V. Lomaszkiewicz, M. Kopchuk, W. Szajkowski, and I. Petrouchtchak. |
