Troy Attractions

Troy is more than 200 years old. Located along the Hudson River in New York, Troy was a major center for the industrial revolution in the 1800's. Most of Troy's buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries including wood frame, terra cotta, brownstone, and brick houses in Queen Anne, Mansard, Beaux Arts, Romanesque, Italianate, Greek Revival, and Gothic Revival.

Here are some interesting places to go in Troy:

 Bennington Battlefield.
Rt. 67, Hoosick Falls, 518-279-1155. Site of British Army's defeat by American forces during the invasion of 1777. Open Memorial Day to Columbus Day.

 Berkshire Bird Paradise.
43 Red Pond Rd., Petersburg, 518-279-3801. Has more than 2,000 birds from over 150 species. Open mid May to October, 9 AM to 6 PM daily.

 Cherry Plain State Park.
Miller Rd., Cherry Plain, 518-279-1155. Picnic area, beach, fishing, boat launch, playground, hunting in the fall. Open June 20th to September 7th.

 Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center.
South Rd., off Rt. 2, Grafton, 518-658-2055. Enjoy bird watching, fishing, hiking, nature trails and picnicking. Offers public nature programs. Open daily sunrise to sunset.

 Florence Jones Reinman Wildlife Sanctuary.
Off Rt. 29, Oppenheim, 518-568-7101. Film and slide programs, exhibits and natural history. Open May through September.

 Grafton Lakes State Park.
Rt. 2, Grafton, 518-279-1155. A 2,357-acre park with picnic areas, shelters, trails and some handicapped access. Open year 'round. Longest white sand beach in the area.

 St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
58 3rd St., Troy, 518-273-7351. Est. 1804. "The Tiffany Church." National Historic Landmark.

The Arts Center
189 2nd St., Troy, 518-273-0552(Rensselaer County Council for the Arts). The Center's gallery offers year-round exhibits of challenging contemporary art. Open Wednesday through Friday 9 AM to 5 PM and Saturday 9 AM to 4 PM and by appointment.

 Troy's RiverSpark Visitor Center.
251 River St., Troy, 518-270-8667. Multi-media introduction to the Hudson-Mohawk Heritage Area. Walking and driving tour maps available Tuesday through Saturday from 11 AM to 6 PM; Thursday until 8 PM; first Sunday of the month from noon to 5 PM.

Troy Savings Bank Music Hall
32 2nd St., Troy, 518-273-0038. Relax and enjoy the music in this magnificent hall. The music hall, which opened in 1875, is built over the Troy Savings Bank. FREE concerts are offered once a month during a weekday lunch hour (noon-1 p.m.).

 Uncle Sam's Grave.
Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, 518-272-7520. Grave of "Uncle Sam" Wilson who came to personify the United States of America.
