Schenectady Attractions
Schenectady is known as "The City that Lights and Hauls the
World". It's a medium sized city with a population around 62,000 residents
near the juncture of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers. It was first settled in
1661 when the area was a colony of the Netherlands. Union College was
founded here in 1795. In 1887 Thomas Edison moved his Edison Machine Works
to Schenectady and in 1892 Schenectady became the headquarters of the
General Electric Company. The American Locomotive Company (ALCO) was also
based in Schenectady.

Central
Park.
Iroquois Way, off State St., Schenectady, 518-382-5152. Woodlands, swimming
pool, two tennis courts, baseball stadium, soccer, bocce, gardens, playground
and picnicking. New performance stage and band shell, the Agnes McDonald
Music Haven.
Electric
City Trolley.
Schenectady, 518-382-5147. An hour-long guided tour through history of downtown
Schenectady.
Florence
Jones Reinman Wildlife Sanctuary.
Off Rt. 29, Oppenheim, 518-568-7101. Film and slide programs, exhibits and
natural history. Open May through September.
G.E.
Realty Plot.
Schenectady, 518-382-5147. Architectural styles of the early 1900's, Victorian
and Colonial Revival, Tudor and Spanish. Free tour map.
Jay
Street Pedestrian Plaza.
Schenectady, 1-800-962-8007, 518-372-5656. An eclectic assortment of shops
and restaurants, along an attractive brick walkway.
Lock
Seven Erie/Barge Canal.
Lock Seven Rd., Niskayuna, 518-374-7912. Boat launch, adjacent bike path,
nearby nature preserve and fishing.
Mohawk
- Hudson Bikeway.
Connects Albany and Schenectady counties, 518-372-5656 or 1-800-962-8007.

Proctor's
Theater.
432 State St, Schenectady, 518-346-6204. A beautifully restored vaudeville
theater, bringing touring Broadway shows, concerts and movies.
Rotterdam
Square Mall.
93 W. Campbell Rd., Schenectady, 518-374-3713. One hundred stores including
Sears, Filenes's and K-Mart. Five movie theaters and a food court with a
merry-go-round.
Rose
Garden.
Central Park, Schenectady, 518-372-5656. Features more than 4,400 bushes
and 200 varieties of roses. Open June through frost, 10 AM to 10 PM.
The Historic Stockade
District.
Schenectady, 518-374-0263 A handsomely preserved 300-year old neighborhood.
Union
College.
Schenectady, 518-388-6098. This scenic campus includes the Nott Memorial,
a National Historic Landmark, and Jackson's Garden, eight acres of woodlands.
Vale
Park.
Nott Terrace, Schenectady. Wroght iron gates welcome visitors to it's walking
trails, gazebo, playground and picnic pavilion.
