Here's my own history of cropped/bald women :- 1978 - Persis Khambata goes bald for Star Trek the motion picture. A new look is born. 1980-83 - Very short hair becomes much more acceptable amongst young women in the UK. The "skinhead" becomes a chic look for not only men, but women. Still very much a street look at this time. 1984-89 - Models start cropping their locks in the name of style. Jenny Howorth and Angie Hill sport bleached white crops and are rarely out of the magazines. By the end of the decade the Sinead look is born. 1990-95 - For me, the height of headshaving popularity. Young stylish women suddenly have no problem parting with most or all of their hair. A whole host of tank girl clones, get their locks shorn to go with their combat boots and catsuits. Bald women are rarely off the European Catwalks, most notably the tattooed French model Eve Salvail. Loads of young black models go a stage further and simply clean shave their heads. One a personal note, one of my University friend's gets her formerly long locks shaved to a Grade 1 crop. 1995-2000 - Hair seems to get progressively longer, although the shaved head is never far away. Eden Harel stuns MTV viewers by going from long, dark and wild to totally bald overnight. Nell McAndrew becomes the first shaven-headed women to appear topless in a UK Newspaper. 2000- The 21st century has been relatively quiet time, but surely there's a whole new crop of beauties ready for the kindest cut. |
