KIMBERLIN BROWN will leave her role as Rachel on PC, likely by the end of November, sources have told Soap Opera Weekly. Insiders whispers that her character will depart in a "spectacular" way. "ABC doesn't comment on rumors," a PC spokesperson woman said. A phone call to the talent agency that represents Brown was met with a terse, "No Comment." Brown joined PC in July 1999 after 8 years as the evil Sheila Carter on Y&R and B&B. A spokesperson for B&B denied a rumor that Brown will return to the show as Sheila.
Brown may not be the only one to go in the near furture. With the growing number of writers being added to the ratings-challenged sudser, insiders hint that there may be more exits ahead as the show revs up for its new story-arc format.
PC set a benchmark in daytime with the introduction of opening credits that include character names alongside the images of the actors who portray them. "we were having a conversation about what can we do to make the show more accessible," explains PC Executive Producer JULIE HANAN CARRUTHERS. "Because as a half hour soap we're on for such a short amount of time, you don't neccessarily get to all the names. And we don't like to repeat the name of the character all the time. So we came up with including the characters' first names in the opening credits which was launched the week of September 25th. Carruthers adds that the identification technique will come in handy with the new affiliates who've recently picked up the struggling soap, including Oregon and Nebraska. "That's the obvious goal," she notes. "To make the show easier to join in when you don't know what's going on." The actors, however, aren't all thrilled to be identified by their characters names--especially when the No. 1 soap, Young and Restless, is showcasing the actor's names next to their images in the opening credits, echoing the openings of prime-time series. "In the case of that show, they have longevity," rebuts Carruthers. "We don't have that luxury."

"ABC doesnn't comment on rumors," says a PC rep. An ABC insider also dispelled talk of the supposed negotiations. "Kimberlin's stryline is very strong right now. She'll be busy all through October and play very heavily through November sweeps.
Starting at the end of November sweeps, PC will abandon the traditional soap format in favor of 12-week story arcs. That form os storytelling made monster hits out shows like L.A. Law, and ER, and ABC hopes the strategy will broaden PC's fan base while holding on to she show's current viewers. Given PC's disappointing ratings, a bold move may be in order.
