Losers in Love

Chapter Five

Kevin walked over to the window looking out at the white earth beneath the window as he thought about everything that had been happening in his life. How had things spun so far out of control for him? He’d wanted to make everything right for everyone, but everything still felt so wrong. All he’s wanted was to get some clarity in his life and yet when the truth was sitting there staring him in the face, he found himself unable to own up to it, to what it could mean to him and now...well, now it was almost too late to just live with the truth. Hearing the footsteps behind him, he turned to see Eve stepping down the stairs.

“Hi,” she said lightly rubbing her eyes as he held his mug in hand tighter.

“Morning,” he nodded watching her and still finding himself not sure how to respond to her after their blow out the previous night. He continued the conversation, “sleep well?”

“Not really,” she confessed watching him for a moment before crossing the room, “you?”

“Not at all,” he shook his head as he watched her move towards him, “Eve, what’s happening to us?”

“You tell me,” Eve replied watching him as she took a seat on the sofa, “what’s going on Kevin?”

“So much happened while you were gone,” he replied drifting his gaze to the floor where he and Lucy had made love not so long ago. Still the memory burned hot in his mind as his eyes traveled back to his wife. He watched her looking to him expectantly and he took in a breath, “I don’t know how we found ourselves so lost Eve.”

“I want to be able to find us again Kevin,” Eve informed him softly, “I want us to find a way to pick the pieces up again.”

“Eve, I want that too,” Kevin admitted stepping towards her, “when I’d thought I’d lost you, it was the most horrible ache inside of me...”

“I felt it too,” she nodded as she watched him, “I mean I don’t remember everything here, but I know that I must’ve felt it as being away from you in the past has always made me feel like a part of me was gone.”

“Without you, it felt as though I lost the best part of me,” Kevin replied closing the distance between them as he took a seat beside her on the sofa. Without another word, he wrapped her up in his arms pulling her into an embrace as his eyes drifted to the floor and he found himself thinking about Lucy. He squeezed Eve to him tighter trying to forget what he’d shared with Lucy as he held her. Eve was home again and that was what was important. She was important to him.

“Kevin, I’ve missed you,” Eve spoke squeezing him to her as she heard the front door open and she looked over his shoulder to see Livvie walking into the lighthouse.

“Oh I’m sorry,” Livvie explained wiping at her face again as she looked to her father and Eve, “I didn’t mean to interrupt here, so don’t mind me.”

“Livvie,” Kevin smiled as he and Eve parted, “We were just about to have breakfast here, so why don’t you...” he began as he noticed the upset look over her features, “What’s wrong?”

“It’s nothing,” Livvie shrugged, “I think I just need some rest.”

“No it’s not nothing,” Kevin replied giving Eve a look before getting up to go over to his daughter, “Livvie, what’s happened?”

“Nothing,” Livvie shrugged, “at least not anything I want to talk about.”

“Livvie if something is bothering you...” Kevin began.

“You can tell us,” Eve informed her as she rose from the sofa, “we’re here to listen you know.”

“I don’t really think I can get into it,” Livvie replied looking over to Eve, “it’s not really something that I feel comfortable talking about.”

“You can talk to me Livvie,” Eve began sympathetically as she turned her eyes to Kevin, “unless you two want some alone time.”

“If you don’t mind...” Kevin nodded turning his eyes to Eve, “I think it would be best.”

“Of course,” Eve replied looking to the kitchen, “I’ll just go put on some hot chocolate here as I think we could all use it.”

“Thanks Eve,” Kevin smiled lightly as she walked out of the room and into the kitchen leaving him some alone time with his daughter, “alright now. What’s bothering you Livvie?”

“It’s nothing....well,” she paused looking to Kevin, “you know how could I be so wrong about someone?”

“About who?” Kevin asked.

“About Chris....” Livvie sighed, “I mean I thought that he was this wonderful guy here and everyone kept saying he wasn’t, but still I believed...”

“Livvie, Chris has a way of being deceptive with people and you can’t blame yourself for how he took you in there,” Kevin began seeing the pain behind her eyes, “you just wanted to think the best about him.”

“I wanted to think the best about everyone, but well, I’m finding that every time I do, well, I’m just wrong,” Livvie continued with a groan as she walked away, “I mean you can think you know someone, that you know what they’re about and then they do something that completely catches you off guard. It’s like what you believed to be true about them just isn’t true and then you look like a big fool....”

“Livvie, you’re not a big fool for trusting Chris. You thought he was your friend.”

“It goes deeper than that,” she argued, “I mean my whole life all I’ve done is kept believing in these people who just lied to me. Every time I put faith in someone, they just let me down.”

“I’m sorry Livvie,” Kevin frowned hating to see his daughter in so much pain, “I wish that you never had to go through that.”

“So do I,” she sighed as he reached out to hug her. She accepted the hug as she felt the tears building once more, “and what’s worse is I really thought that she was different, you know? I thought that she wasn’t like the rest of you as she’d always been nice to me, but I guess I should’ve known after what she did to you, but I still wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt.”

“She?” Kevin raised a brow curiously as he hugged her, “I thought we were talking about Chris?”

“Well, we were....I mean we are, but it’s beyond Chris,” Livvie continued with a frown, “I mean it’s about Lucy.”

“Lucy?” Kevin frowned, “what about Lucy?”

“I just can’t believe how wrong I was about her. First she ends up switching those DNA results there on you to make you think Eve was dead and then I find out that she and Chris have been fooling around with one another....” Livvie sighed, “none of it makes sense.”

Kevin’s jaw dropped instantly, “What did you just say? I don’t think I heard you right.”

“It’s true,” Livvie nodded, “I went over to his place earlier and I found them together. I mean Chris tried to hide the fact that she was with him, but I forgot my purse and when I walked back in there they were on the floor on top of each other.”

“What?!? Lucy?” Kevin repeated in shock shaking his head, “No, you must’ve seen that wrong.”

“I was there,” Livvie protested thinking back, “Lucy and Chris were rolling around on the floor together and they didn’t look like they wanted any interruptions there. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I wonder just how long they’ve been together there.”

“Lucy is not fooling around with Chris Ramsey,” Kevin blurted out feeling his anger rise a bit, “That much I’m sure of. She‘s much smarter than that and she hates Chris. The two don‘t even speak together.”

“I was there. I saw it!” Livvie replied, “Are you saying I’m lying?”

“No I’m not saying that, but I know...I just...I just know that Lucy would not be involved with Chris. It‘s impossible,” Kevin insisted as the kitchen door swung open and Eve walked out.

“What did you just say?” she gasped in astonishment, “Please tell me that I heard you wrong there.”

“Eve,” Livvie gasped turning around to face her, “I thought that you were putting on some cocoa.”

“Well, I was but now I’m not,” Eve explained simply, “what is this you’re saying about Lucy and Chris?”

“Eve,” Livvie turned her eyes away as Eve stepped forward.

“Answer me Livvie,” Eve snapped at her again, “I heard you say that you saw Lucy and Chris together at his apartment. What were they doing?”

“I thought you were going to give us some private time,” Livvie replied with a slight gasp as she turned her eyes to Eve, “I thought you weren’t going to spy on us.”

“I wasn’t spying, but I heard you mention Chris and...” Eve trailed off before taking in a breath, “now what was Lucy doing with Chris?”

“I...I....I have to get out of here,” Livvie stammered as she looked between Kevin and Eve for a moment or so before bolting out of the lighthouse in a rush.

Kevin gave Eve a brief, disapproving stare before he turned after the direction Livvie had gone off in and he called out to her, “Livvie wait.”

Eve watched Kevin chase off after his daughter as she thought about what she’d heard Livvie say. Chris being with Lucy. Eve shook the thought. There was no way that Chris would ever in a million years spend time with that horrible woman. It just wasn’t possible. Livvie had to be lying. Eve turned her eyes towards the doorway again and she found Kevin standing before her returning into the lighthouse without Livvie as he slammed the door behind him.

“Are you happy now?” He grumbled at her in frustration.

“What do you mean am I happy now?” Eve asked surprised.

“You just chased my daughter away here when she was trying to open up to me Eve,” Kevin shot back at her, “we were having a moment until you decided to put your two cents in.”

“Excuse me for wanting to be involved,” Eve replied watching him, “Kevin I heard her talk about Chris and Lucy and I...”

“You were spying Eve,” Kevin cut her off with a frown, “that’s what you were doing.”

“I wasn’t spying,” she defended, “I just heard that...”

“You were spying,” he repeated again feeling his anger build inside of him. He wasn’t really quite sure why, but somehow Eve had posed as an easy target as she’d been the reason Livvie left. Yes, that had to be it.

“Kevin, I just wanted to know...” Eve began shaking her head, “I wanted to hear what she had to say.”

“Now none of us will get that luxury because she’s gone Eve,” Kevin huffed before reaching over for his jacket on the coat rack before throwing his arms into it.

“Where are you going?” Eve asked as he moved towards the desk picking up his car keys.

“To go find my daughter,” Kevin answered flatly as he moved towards the door.

“You can’t leave now Kevin,” Eve darted towards him, “you and I were just talking about...”

“It’ll have to wait Eve because I need to find Livvie. She was obviously upset and I didn’t get an opportunity to be there for her before you burst in here making her feel unwelcome in my home here.”

“Our home Kevin,” Eve reminded him as she saw the sparks behind his eyes, “I didn’t mean to make her feel like she had to leave.”

“You don’t mean to do a lot of things, but you still end up doing them, don’t you?” Kevin threw out an accusatory tone before stomping out onto the porch and slamming the door shut behind him.

“Kevin,” Eve started moving towards the door before stopping herself. She leaned back against the door closing her eyes as she thought of what just had taken place between them. Something was wrong. She was sure of it. While Kevin hadn’t said much about it, somehow Eve couldn’t fight the feeling that she’d lost something in Kevin since she’d been kidnapped and now the distance between them...it was so frightening and yet...she opened her eyes again realizing the only way she was going to figure any of this out was to get some answers and as of now that’s exactly what she was going to do.

Lucy looked around the hospital board room wondering where she’d lost it. Her diamond tennis bracelet that Scott and Serena had given her for Christmas a while back was missing and this was the last place she’d remembered having it. She was certain that she hadn’t been wearing it when she ran into Kevin at the nurse’s station, nor did she have it when she was over at the Ramsey apartment the previous night. The Ramsey apartment, she laughed to herself lightly wondering how in the world she’d gotten herself caught up in that nightmare. She shook her head remembering the urge that had overtaken her earlier as she’d wanted to strangle Chris, but at the last moment she’d found the strength to walk away before she had yet another charge being brought up against her. Now if she could only find that bracelet, she thought to herself as she knelt down over by the table.

“Lucy,” Ian’s voice called out to her as she looked up swiftly and managed to bump her head in the process, “are you alright?”

“I’m fine,” Lucy groaned slightly rubbing her aching head, “or rather as good as to be expected here.”

“I’m glad I caught you here,” Ian smiled at her simply.

“Really?” she gave him a look, “that’s surprising considering that I would’ve thought you were one of the last people in Port Charles that would want to see me after you found out what I did.”

“I didn’t say that I was happy with you,” Ian frowned slightly, “but you made a mistake and who am I to judge?”

“It was your life I was playing God with,” Lucy sighed.

“No Lucy, Harris did that. You just thought you were doing your best to protect Kevin,” Ian replied lightly as his eyes searched hers, “are you sure you’re okay?”

“I’m fine,” Lucy nodded in agreement as he reached out to touch her head lightly, “just fine.”

“Why don’t you just let me look at it?” Ian suggested rubbing his palm over her soft hair for a moment before their eyes connected again.

“Why are you being so nice to me?” Lucy questioned lightly watching his concerned eyes, “after everything--”

“Let’s just say I know what it’s like to lose,” Ian sighed as he released his hold on her, “you look like you’re going to be just fine here. Though you might want to put some ice on it.”

“Thanks,” Lucy paused for a moment, “Ian, what really happened with you and Eve?”

“It doesn’t matter Lucy,” Ian shrugged turning his eyes away, “she doesn’t remember.”

“But you do,” Lucy pointed out watching the way he kept avoiding eye contact with him, “you care about her very much don’t you?”

“She’s with her husband now and I expect her to stay happy that way,” Ian offered turning his eyes towards hers once again, “Eve deserves nothing but happiness in her life as she’s a wonderful woman.”

“She’s not as wonderful as the world would like to believe,” Lucy answered dryly.

“Why don’t you give her a chance Lucy? Eve’s got a very kind heart,” Ian defended finding his feelings for Eve shining through as he disapproved of Lucy’s words against Eve.

“Ian, you don’t really know her as well as you think you do,” Lucy began again as she noticed someone walk past the board room. Her eyes instantly shot out into the hallway where she saw Kevin searching around. He walked past again before turning his attention to the two of them and he stepped inside.

“Ian, Lucy,” he spoke behind a strained voice, “have either one of you seen Livvie around here?”

“Is something wrong Doc?” Lucy questioned concerned as she watched his eyes.

“She’s missing,” Kevin explained frustrated as he turned his eyes to Lucy briefly, “I need to find her.”

“Well, maybe I could help you look for--” Lucy started again.

“No,” Kevin cut back sharply, “you’ve done quite enough here.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means that...” Kevin began as he was interrupted by the sounds of Detective Garcia.

“Lucy, my what a surprise finding you back here at the scene of the crime,” Garcia spoke out smugly as he entered the room carrying a gray plastic video cassette tape in his hand, “I was just about to take a look at this with Commissioner Scorpio,” Garcia explained with a gnawing grin.

“What is that?” Lucy questioned feeling her breath catch in her throat as she turned her eyes towards Kevin, “Doc?”

Kevin looked to the door of the board room as Mac stepped in. A bit surprised himself, he turned his eyes to his friend, “Mac, what’s going on?”

“It seems that one of the security cameras here picked up Lucy on the computer,” Mac began with a slight frown.

“But Doc I thought.....” Lucy turned her eyes to him as she found her anger rise a bit, “you said that you weren’t going to press charges there. You told me that you were upset, but you wouldn’t do that to me. What is this now?”

“Lucy I didn’t,” Kevin admitted turning his eyes towards Ian.

“Don’t look at me,” Ian shrugged his shoulders, “Granted I can think of a great many other things Lucy could’ve done there, but I would never, ever press charges against her,” he turned his attention to Mac, “she made a mistake, but for all the good she does, I would never want her behind bars like that.”

“This is out of my hands,” Mac said apologetically as he looked back over to Lucy, “I can’t just drop this.”

“But Mac....” Lucy began again a bit bewildered by the situation.

“I’m sorry Lucy,” Mac sighed, “but with Eve being so insistent.”

“Eve?” Lucy gasped outraged, “I don’t believe this,” she looked to Kevin, “how could you let her do this? How could you have Eve hurt me like this?”

“Lucy I didn’t....” Kevin defended.

“Oh yeah right you didn’t have anything to do with this,” Lucy snapped at him, “let me guess you probably encouraged her to do this so that I wouldn’t open my mouth about things you’d rather she just not hear about. I mean, hell, it’s easier to lock me up than to have to face me day in and day out, right?”

“Lucy--”

“Don’t you Lucy me,” she snapped at him, “I see exactly what you’re doing Kevin Collins and if that’s the way you want it. Fine, you just be miserable, because I’m through with you. You and Little Evie can have your happily ever after for all I care. I mean after all far be it from you to care about someone like me.”

“Lucy--” Kevin spoke up again as she glared at him.

“Nothing you can say can make up for this Doc,” Lucy snapped at him as Ian touched her shoulder.

“Lucy, calm down,” Ian instructed as she tightened her fists.

“You know, you’re just like the rest, aren’t you Kevin?” Lucy continued trying to fight tears as Garcia stepped towards the VCR in the center of the room.

“Well while this is all entertaining, I think we should get back to business here,” he decided slipping the tape into the VCR, “I mean we all were bound to see it sooner or later, so why don’t we dispense with the drama and go right for the gusto?”

“Garcia, I don’t think that’s really necessary,” Kevin spoke up watching him press play on the VCR.

“And why is that Doc? Because you want to spare me the public humiliation of letting the world see what a monster I am for wanting to spare your feelings there when your wife was obviously running out on you? I mean that’s all this amounts to right? You’re upset because you know I was trying to do something I thought was right in my heart, but you, you’ve twisted it into me being bad because you can’t own up to the fact that your wife is having an affair?”

“Eve and I are not having an affair,” Ian protested jumping into this.

“Ian, this doesn’t concern you. This is between Lucy and I here,” Kevin replied sharply, “so just butt out.”

“Why should I?” Ian challenged, “you obviously don’t care one way or the other about her here.”

“Because it’s none of your....” Kevin stopped mid-sentence as he heard a familiar voice over the sounds in the room.

“What do you mean this isn’t going to work?” Eve’s voice rang out as all eyes were fixed on the television, “Chris, you were right before this is brilliant.”

“Did you expect anything less from the master?” Chris answered with a wide grin as he handed a bag over to Eve on the television screen.

“Okay, I’ll admit it. You are the king of wicked and soon Lucy Coe is going to see just what a mistake she made in messing with me,” Eve replied with a devilish grin.

“That she is,” Chris chuckled in amusement, “I must say that oddly enough I’m impressed. You’re so bad Lambert and I must admit I find that to be a rather admirable trait,” Chris grinned wider as his hand slipped around her waist down her body as it came dangerously close to her rounded bottom.

She smacked him in the chest before giving him a glare, “Not now Ramsey,” she said giving him a look as he pinched her slightly before releasing his hold on her, “I have more important matters to attend to like showing Lucy Coe that she will not get the best of me.”

“Good for you,” Chris encouraged her with a laugh as he took a step back, “and for the record I must say that I’d hate to be on your bad side Lambert.”

“Oh like you wouldn’t strike back ten times harder,” Eve laughed in euphoric delight, “Lucy is never, ever going to live this one down. She deserves to burn for the misery she’d caused me and I intend to make her pay to the fullest.”

“With this?” Chris questioned in amusement.

“This is good for a start, but I’m just warming up,” Eve boasted as she looked to the vent, “I’m going to see to it that she suffers for what she’s done to me.”

“You’re not bitter are you?” Chris mused watching her set up.

“Lucy has had this coming for a long time,” Eve continued with a determined laugh, “and she’s going to learn that in messing with me, well she’s not going to win. I’ll always be smarter than that nitwit Lucy Coe. If she thinks she’s going to one up me in this battle, she’s sadly mistaken because I plan to bury her one way or the other.....” the voice tapered off for a moment onscreen before Eve began to lay out her plan to destroy the life Lucy had in Port Charles.

“What do you think you’re doing Ramsey?” Eve snapped as she slammed the door behind her upon entering his office.

“Excuse me?” Chris questioned lightly looking up from his work, “don’t you knock?”

“Just when I think you can’t quite possibly sink any lower, you find a way to reach a new level of repulsiveness,” Eve growled at him as she made her way over towards his desk.

“Come again?” Chris watched her for a moment or so as she stalked towards him angrily.

“What? Do you get off on this in some sadistic fashion by making my life miserable? I mean is that what it’s all about? Trying to hurt me in one way or the other there?” Eve blasted him, “what happened to us being friends Chris?”

“Eve, I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Chris answered simply as he reclined back in his chair a bit.

“The hell you don’t,” Eve stepped forward standing in front of his desk as she placed her hands on her hips, “what do you think you’re doing with Lucy Coe?”

“This is about Lucy?” Chris nearly fell out of his chair fighting the urge to laugh at her before he turned suddenly serious, “What about Lucy Coe?”

“As if you didn’t know,” Eve growled again as her eyes cut him over, “I mean to think I actually had respect for you at one point in time.”

“Eve, I really think you need to calm down,” Chris stated coolly as he brought his hands up behind his head in a leisurely fashion, “now why don’t you start from the beginning here?”

“Why don’t I start by telling you what a jerk you are? What a conniving, two-faced, manipulative, hurtful, disgusting....” she rambled on.

“I get the point Eve,” he cut her off with a frown.

“Then tell me Chris. What was Lucy Coe doing at your apartment this morning?” she questioned in an accusatory tone as he sat up straighter in his chair.

“That,” he answered sharply, “is none of your business.”

“None of my business? Chris, that woman is out to destroy my life and when I hear that she’s spending time with you my.....” Eve began in a frenzy.

“Your what Eve?” Chris challenged as he stood from his chair pushing it aside as he locked gazes with her, “your what Eve? Not even two seconds ago you were telling me that I was ‘a conniving, two-faced, manipulative, hurtful, disgusting jerk’ and now I‘m something more to you. What might that be, Eve?”

“You’re my.....” she stopped herself, “a thorn in my side, that’s what you are.”

“In that case,” Chris nodded towards the door, “get out of my office.”

“I’m not leaving until you give me answers Chris,” Eve answered firmly.

“Let me put it this way Eve. You don’t have a say in the matter here,” He said behind clenched teeth, “get out.”

“You owe me Chris,” Eve snapped at him.

“I don’t owe you anything, Eve,” Chris raised his voice a bit, “and if we’re counting on the score card here, I should be the one having a little coming my way, so unless you’ve come here to pay up, get out.”

“Chris, if Lucy is trying to ruin my life, I want to know about it,” Eve demanded as he circled around his desk.

“I don’t think you’re getting the idea here Eve,” he said reaching for her arm, “but you will,” he decided pulling her along his office.

“I’m not going anywhere Chris,” Eve stood firm resisting the force of his pull as she stood taller swatting at him as he tried to pull her from the room, “you’re going to tell me exactly what Lucy was doing at your apartment this morning.”

“Why do you care?” Chris challenged raising a brow, “what does it matter to you who I spend my time with?”

“Because I know Lucy and I know she’s up to something. The way you jumped to her defense the other day, she’s probably believing that she can use you to get to me, to destroy my life and ruin my marriage,” Eve continued in a rant, “she’d do anything to do that you know?”

“Eve, you can’t blame Lucy if things are falling apart with you and Kevin,” Chris reminded her as his face grew expressionless and cold, “after all when a marriage goes to hell, it’s usually someone inside the marriage to blame for going astray.”

“Just because you and Julie couldn’t cut it, doesn’t mean that Kevin and I have an unhealthy relationship,” Eve blurted out angrily, “Kevin is not a nutcase. Julie on the other hand....”

“How do you know that Eve?” He cut her off, “I mean really, how do you know that Kevin isn’t a psycho? You don’t know that. You don’t know him nearly as well as you think you did otherwise you wouldn’t be worried about the state of your marriage right now,” Chris paused for a moment, “then again maybe you do know him more than you let on.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Eve asked watching him, “what are you up to Ramsey?”

“Maybe you’re afraid that Kevin hasn’t forgotten about Lucy and when you were gone maybe the two of them.....” Chris began.

“They didn’t. I know what Livvie said and I heard what Kevin told me,” Eve blurted out trying to dismiss the thought of anything real happening between Kevin and Lucy though she’d thought about it time and time again after the accident, “Kevin is my husband. He loves me....only me. He married me...not Lucy!”

“Now Eve, coming from someone who was an adulteress herself in the past, I would think you know how the sanctity of marriage goes.”

“Don’t you give me lessons on morality now Ramsey because you don’t know the first thing about it,” Eve cut him off bitterly.

“Maybe not Eve, but I know a man with a roving eye when I see it,” Chris blurted out in response, “I’ve known it from the day you allowed him into your life Eve. He’s no good for you and beyond that, he’s never stopped loving Lucy.”

“You don’t have the first damn clue what you’re talking about,” Eve screamed at him furiously, “I have the perfect marriage, with the perfect husband and you’re just jealous and bitter because you couldn’t have that. You didn’t have that in your life and now you’re just trying to push your own fears and doubts off on me.”

“Am I Eve?” Chris questioned calmly as he took a step away from her, “well, if that’s the case, then tell me something here? Why did you burst into my office wondering what Lucy was up to?” He waited as she said nothing, “if you honestly felt in your heart that your marriage wasn’t threatened there, why would you come here looking for answers?”

“I don’t trust her and I never will,” Eve replied through clenched teeth, “Lucy is out to destroy me and I won’t let her get the best of me. I won‘t let her break me.”

“Of course not because that position had already been filled by Kevin,” Chris raised a brow.

Eve blinked her eyes in disbelief, “You can go to hell.”

“Been there, done that Eve,” Chris shrugged, “in more ways than you can imagine.”

“I don’t know what I ever saw in you as a friend,” she stammered a bit feeling as though she’d been hit by a ton of bricks as she turned away from him.

“See what I mean,” Chris laughed bitterly, “there you go. I mean the woman I once knew wouldn’t just walk away from an argument. She’d fight tooth and nail until she made her point be known. She wouldn’t stop until she won,” Chris paused for a moment before letting out a contemplative sigh, “tell me something Eve. What’s it like having the so called fairy tale life? I mean, you claim to think it’s so wonderful, but the way I see it, well, they’d call what Kevin did to you just another modern form of castration, but I guess in having the Cinderella fantasy there, you have to give up on being true to yourself, huh?”

“You just can’t handle the fact that I’m happy and you’re not Chris. You’re miserable and you’d much rather draw out that kind of misery in me so that I could sink to your level and you wouldn’t feel so bad anymore about how horrible you’ve become,” Eve countered as she turned her eyes towards his again.

“Actually Eve, I may have become some of the things that you’ve said,” Chris gave her a once over, “but I wouldn’t trade that in the world for what you’ve become. I can still look at my reflection in the mirror and live with myself. Can you do the same?”

Eve stood frozen for a moment before she let out an exaggerated groan, “You bastard. I hate you,” Eve blurted out before reaching for the door knob and storming out of his office straight into the on call room. She felt the angry tears building up in her eyes as she couldn’t think clearly, couldn’t see straight as she ran directly into Ian.

“Eve,” He spoke as she pulled herself out of his arms and their eyes met, “what’s wrong?”

“Nothing Ian. Everything’s fine,” She snapped as Chris emerged from his office and she turned to look at him, “Some people just refuse to believe that, but they‘re going to have to deal with it anyways,” she turned her eyes towards Ian again, “in fact, what do you say you and I go for a cup of coffee or something?”

“I don’t think so Eve,” Ian shook his head as he turned his eyes away unwilling to look at her.

“Ian, is something wrong?” Eve asked feeling a coldness in the air as he kept from making eye contact with her.

“I think you’d better find your husband Eve,” Ian offered thinking back to what he’d witnessed in the board room, “he needs to talk to you.”

“Ian,” Eve began again as Chris stepped into the room.

“Don’t you have a life Ramsey?” Eve asked trying to keep her temper in check as she glared at him.

“Don’t let me break this up here,” Chris rolled his eyes slightly before walking over to his locker, “unless of course this is part of your fairy tale here that you’d like me to take some pointers on.”

Eve rolled her eyes before turning her attention to Ian, “why don’t you come with me to find Kevin?”

“Eve, I don’t think it’s a good idea,” Ian frowned slightly, “I think you should go on your own.”

“Is something wrong?” Eve asked lightly.

“Mac and Garcia were here looking for Lucy,” Ian informed her as he looked back at her, “they came for her because of the DNA test.”

“Really?” Eve couldn’t help but smile a bit as she felt a breath of relief, “it’s about damn time they picked her up.”

“Eve,” Ian sighed as he shook his head, “how could you do it?”

“Excuse me?” Eve asked noting the way he was looking at her with such a strong disapproval, with...., “Ian she let the world believe we were dead. She tried to keep the fact that we were alive from the people we loved and cared about most in this world.”

“No Eve,” Ian sighed again, “she was just trying to even up the score card you two have going.”

“Score card?” she repeated.

“You honestly don’t have any idea what the first thing about love is about, do you Lambert?” Ian asked with a frown realizing that the woman standing before him was a stranger. Granted he’d overlooked the other things in her life that had come her way, but this, when he thought of what he’d witnessed, “I don’t even know you Eve, and sadly enough, I’m realizing that I don’t want to nearly as much as I thought I did.”

“Ian.....” Eve began again as he took a step away from her.

“Maybe it’s a good thing you forgot what happened when we were kidnapped Eve,” Ian responded poignantly as he tore his eyes from her, “there are some things that shouldn’t ever come to light again.”

“Ian......” she stammered a bit as she felt his pulling away from her.

“You know,” he laughed lightly looking to Chris, “you two really deserve each other. You both have no idea what it means to be caring or compassionate,” he looked back to Eve, “I’m sorry that I misjudged you Eve.”

“Ian,” Eve began again, “Lucy had this coming to her. What she did was wrong.”

“What you both did was wrong Eve,” Ian frowned slightly, “and you can’t keep pretending Lucy’s the only one to blame here,” with that he took a step back and walked over towards the door again giving her one last look, “good-bye Eve.”

“Ian,” she called out to him as he left the room and she turned her eyes to Chris, “what have you done now?”

“Don’t look at me,” Chris shrugged watching her, “if you recall I was in my office fighting with you.”

“He wouldn’t just act like that for no reason,” Eve reminded him as she saw the look on his face, “Okay Ramsey, spill it. What has Lucy done?”

“I have no idea what Lucy’s done, but you were going to have her arrested?” Chris questioned surprised as he thought about what Ian had said.

“Of course I was. She couldn’t just do that to me and get away with it. When I think about what she did to my friends, to those I cared about, to me and more importantly what she did to Kevin......” Eve began in her defense.

“It’s nothing like what you did now, is it Eve?” Kevin’s voice cut her off as she spun around to look at him standing near the door looking a bit uneasy as he stepped forward.

“Kevin, I was just going to come looking for you,” Eve began as she moved over to him. She brought her arms out to embrace him and he took a step back, “Kevin?”

He said nothing for a long period of time as he watched her, trying to come to terms with what he’d just witnessed. Finally, he looked over to Chris and he spoke tightly, “I’d like to speak to my wife...alone.”

“Of course,” Chris nodded not bothering to follow up with anymore words as he felt the tension in the air between Kevin and Eve. He heard the door close behind him as he stepped out into the hallway letting out a breath he’d been holding for quite some time.

“Chris,” he heard Lucy call out to him as she rushed over to his side tugging on his arm.

“What?” he snapped at her as he shook himself free of her touch.

“We need to talk,” Lucy demanded watching his eyes as she found herself compelled by something she hadn’t felt before. In viewing that tape, something had hit her, something she’d lost for a long time and now, well, now she was ready to get to the heart of the matter, “now.”

“It can wait,” Chris shrugged again as he walked past her, “I’m busy.”

“No Chris,” Lucy blurted out, “you’re not going anywhere.”
