Cowboys see positives after public meeting

DUNGOWAN Cowboys came closer to roping in their own ground and entering a team in Group 4 second division next year following a positive meeeting with Parry councillors and Dungowan community on Tuesday evening.
The campaign earlier in the year to form a local football club (next to the current equestrian arena which is maintained by the village progress association) gained plenty of support, but not enough to give the idea a 100 per cent backing.
That led to this weeks meeting with community and councillors so that everyone had a chance to contribute the positives and negatives, spokesman Peter Draper said.
Council gave everyone a fair go, hearing the arguments for and against. And those who wanted to ask questions of council could,Draper said.
A friendly sausage sizzle and get-together discussion followed the meeting and a significant number of those opposed initially changed their minds and came our way,it was a big positive. But an even bigger positive was the fact that members of the Adult Equestrian Club, who were completely against the idea, volunteered to help the progress association do repair work to the equestrian arena, which is adjacent to the proposed football grounds.
Doing that will make them part of the progress association, and in turn, give them a strong voice in the community.
Getting them to do that was one big step in the right direction for us.
We don't want to divide the community, but help it pull together and work in one direction. The meeting was a huge step in doing just that.Draper said that the Cowboys had made the required submission to council. Now it was time to give it up to the 12 elected representatives to determine whether the football ground and team goes ahead.

Cowboys find home ground
By Geoff Newling
DUNGOWAN Rugby League Football Club will play at Dungowan after all.

While the Cowboys won't play on the Dungowan Reserve after a 7-6 Parry Shire Council vote vetoed their plans, they will be next door.

Yesterday the Parry Shire Council gave the Cowboys permission to play on the Dungowan campdraft arena.

"We've received permission from the Parry Shire Council to develop the existing equestrian arena into a football ground," Cowboys publicity officer Peter Draper said.

"It's a major compromise for us but one which will benefit the whole community."

Dungowan stages two major campdraft events a year, one in February and one in September.

It caters for large numbers of campdrafters and about 1000 head of cattle each weekend.

That means the arena has to be ploughed up before both campdrafts to make it safer for horse, steer and drafter.

That means the Cowboys rugby league club will have to work on the ground each year straight after the February campdraft to have it ready for home games.
