NEWSPAPER REPORTS 2001

Farrer gives Cowboys facilities for training
By Geoff Newling
FARRER Memorial Agricultural High School has come to the aid of the Dungowan Cowboys Rugby League Football Club.

The local school, steeped in rugby league tradition, has made its ovals, pool and gymnasium available for the Cowboys to train on in preparation for their debut in the 2001 Hazelton Airlines Shield, the Group 4 Rugby League's Second Division competition.

Cowboy publicity officer Peter Draper said the gesture is heart warming for the club as it develops its home ground at Dungowan.

"It is very generous and greatly appreciated by the club," Draper said yesterday.

"The school has always had a very good relationship with the local community."

A number of the Cowboys are ex-Farrer students.

The Cowboys start training for the 2001 season at Farrer next Thursday from 6pm.

Meanwhile, Group 4 First Division champions West Lions began their preparations for the 2001 season with the first official session at Scully Park last night.

All grades trained together under senior coaches Tony La Chiusa (firsts) and Mick Schmiedel (seconds).

The Lions have lost a number of last season's premiership winning side and face a major rebuilding program, club president Dave Dundas said.

"Mick Schmeidel is looking forward to a return to the coaching scene after a few years concentrating solely on playing," he said.

"His experience and ability to bring players together is of great benefit to the club and he has indicated that he and first grade coach Tony LaChiusa are eager to bring a large number of juniors into the senior grades and give them the opportunity this season."

Dundas is chasing not only players for the 2001 season but also first aid officers and strappers in all grades. He said the club will put all applicants through the approriate ARL courses.

Northern Daily Leader 4 January 2001

At least six teams line up for Hazelton Shield
By Geoff Newling
GROUP 4's Second Division Hazelton Shield competition will be a six or seven team competition in 2001.

Binnaway, Coolah and Dunedoo clubs, who played in the Group 4 Second Division last season, have returned to form a Group 14 competition with Coonamble, Gilgandra and Baradine.

The new competition is to be called the Castlereagh Cup and runs on a one team, one town basis.

The return of Binnaway, Coolah and Dunedoo means the Hazelton Shield will consist of Manilla, Bendemeer, Dungowan, Curlewis, Boggabri, Barraba and South Tamworth.

Group 4 officials are concerned about South Tamworth and its apparent lack of a coach, players and ground.

Northern Daily Leader 8 January 2001

Bears claims 'clearly' wrong
By Geoff Newling
NORTH Tamworth threats to ban clearance of players to two rival Group 4 clubs has been ridiculed and declared unconstitutional by the opposition clubs Dungowan and Werris Creek.

Bears president Gary Chillingworth launched a salvo at Dungowan and Werris Creek for poaching first grade and potential first grade players
The Group 4 general committee has agreed teams entering or re-entering Group 4 competitions cannot do so at the detriment of existing clubs.

Yet we have Dungowan and Werris Creek totally disregarding this directive by signing senior players from our club,he said.

We will not be releasing the players involved
He said Werris Creek and Dungowan are constantly disregarding those rules and we will not accept it
Our club has worked its insides out to become a force in this competition and we will not have those efforts torn apart by clubs who are totally disregarding the rules that applied to their acceptance into the competition.
He said none of the players involved resided in Dungowan and Werris Creek.

As a club we were pleased to see the Creek back in first division and even more pleased to see the revival of interest in the Tamworth area resulted in Dungowan being established following on from the reformation of Kootingal last season. But we wont see our clus senior ranks decimated as a result. That is not progressing the game one iota. They know the rules on and off the paddock and must abide by them.
Werris Creek secretary Brian Reynolds said Chillingworth doesn't know the rules and must clear the Bear players wanting to transfer to the Magpies.

The Bears have already cleared 2000 reserve grade player of the year, Brad Mulherin, and the Magpies are waiting on a clearance for first grade prop Aaron Considine.

They cannot refuse to clear the players, only if he owes them money of if he?igned the registration for the current season,Reynolds said.

He wants to read the constitution. Aaron is only returning to his old club, he is local junior. His brother, Michael (a local junior), is also returning to us from Wests because they want to play together.
Reynolds said Werris Creek spent the last two seasons playing Group 4 Second Division because clubs such as North Tamworth poached their good players, many of whom are returning to help make the Magpies competitive in the 2001 Hazelton Cup.

Why didn't he think of us when they took our players away,Reynolds said.

We haven't had to poach any players, they all come to us. Some of them were coming off the field after finals last year and asking Ron Dellar about playing.
He said Werris Creek has worked hard to be competitive in 2001.

We are not going to be competitive if we haven't got players.
Dungowan Rugby League Football Club publicity officer Peter Draper said the dispute may have to be decided by the CRL.

If these players are so important to Norths why haven they already signed,Draper said.

We haven't approached any of the players, they have all come to us. We also made it extremely clear we aren't paying any players. There's no financial inducement to come out here and play. The only thing we have got out here is they are a great bunch of blokes and the committee is looking after them.
He said the Cowboys had signed up two former North Tamworth players who had not played for a number of seasons as well as two reserve grade Bears.

They spend a hell of a lot time out here with their best mates who are playing with us. They just want to play with their mates. We haven't done anything wrong and we are operating well and truly within the rules and the spirit of the game.

Its unfortunate Gary Chillingworth has gone to the media to air his complaints. The media can't solve his this. And it is not a personal attack on him, we know he works hard for the Bears. But this is all about the social aspect and the mateship out here.

Dungowan Cowboys riding high

DUNGOWAN Cowboys showcased all that is good with sport when they returned to rugby league for the first time in half a century with an emotion-charged 30-10 win over Kootingal Roosters on Saturday.

About 1000 spectators swelled the tiny Dungowan Recreation Reserve to the limit and then celebrated a marvellous return to the Hazelton Shield Group 4 Second Division.

Dungowan last played in 1952.

On Sunday some of those players were paraded to the crowd before the kick-off of the historic game.

Men such as 82-year-old Keith Moss relived some fond memories of football from the 1940s and 50s.

The special parade was a touching part of a fairytale return built on hard work and enthusiasm from a club re-formed after a conversation between Dungowan Tavern publican Kevin Smith and Paul Tongue. Smith, the Dungowan Rugby League Football Club president, said the formation of the club had been "quick, hectic and community driven".

"This has not been achieved by a few hard workers but by the Dungowan community, who together have driven and built the Dungowan Cowboys in a short time," he said.

The Dungowan Recreation Reserve was rebuilt from scratch after the Dungowan Campdraft in February. The playing area was ploughed and grass seed sown. Dressing sheds were built, the fence moved out and work done on the surrounds. A scoreboard and goalposts were also erected.

On Saturday the Cowboys even had a team mascot, Peter Schofield, atop his horse rushing around the ground, a la the Brisbane Broncos, after every home try.

Dungowan officials were stunned and excited by the reception.

Dungowan captain-coach Scott Swain, a former NRL player, was overwhelmed by the support for his team and the feeling surrounding the team after its 30-12 win.

"The feeling around is pretty awesome," he said after the win from the Dungowan Tavern.

"I've never played in a side that had the spirit and the defence this side had today. We didn't want to disappoint the district after everything they have done for us. This is absolutley unbelievable, what sport is all about. Not one of the players here gets paid. We're here to play for the team and the town. It's the pride that'll win us games. I just can't explain how this feels. You had to see the defence to believe it."

Dungowan shrugs off its injury crisis

DUNGOWAN 60

BOGGABRI 12

DUNGOWAN overcame its injury crisis to post a 60-12 win over Boggabri Kangaroos at Jubilee Oval, Boggabri last Saturday and leave the Kangaroos entrenched at the bottom of the Hazelton Shield ladder.

The Cowboys entered the game missing almost a dozen regulars but received great support from the promoted benchmen.

Shane McLean and Al Mumford came off the interchange to start the game and produce some strong minutes.

McLean ran the ball strongly and Mumford produced some big hits.

Dungowan captain-coach Scott Swain led the way with an inspiring game.

Justin Gleeson was having his first game for the Cowboys and scored the first try as well as adding another.

Michael Lingwood bagged three tries as well.

Sid Cutmore ran onto a short Scott Swain pass to score a great try while crowd favourite Andrew Robinson scored after some good work by Peter Rushbrook.

Paul Tongue also had a big game and earned the Group 4 B&F points while Sid Cutmore?trong game gave him the two. Adam Stahn never stopped trying for Boggabri and received the one.

"It was a gutsy effort from a Dungowan side missing 11 players through injury or outside commitments and showed how much heart this club has," Cowboys?ter Draper said.

"Dungowan travels to Manilla next Saturday and we intend using it as a benchmark for our season.

"With several players returning from injury next week the next two training sessions will be very interesting with players attempting to gain a starting spot in a side full of determination."
