Our Favorite Links

Here are some of our favorite travel resources that have helped us  plan this trip.

World Travel Planning:

On-line Guidebooks:

  • Lonely Planet - another one of our favorite sites.  Contains  comprehensive info that complements their books,  plus travelers advice and warnings.

  • Rough Guides - good site with information on many countries.  We especially like the "best of" section.

  • Fodors - nice site with a good travelers bulletin board.

  • Rick Steves - some excerpts from his travel guides along with another travelers bulletin board.

  • Frommer's Budget Travel - annoying graphics but you can get excerpts from the magazine plus a daily newsletter.

Travelogues:

  • RTW Travelogues Online - impressive list of travelogues including 19 that are still on the road.  We plan to have ours listed here soon.

  • Wired2TheWorld - we have been following this couple from LA for the last year, and hope to meet up with them in May.

  • GoGlobalGirl - fellow Chicagoan who traveled for a year and missed it so much she went back for another trip (Kelly met her for dinner and went through several notebooks writing down travel tips.)

  • Timezone7 - the brother of a co-worker of mine.  We love the graphics on his site (he's a designer).

  • Ben and Vija's Round the World Adventure - we saved close to $1000 on travel insurance after finding this site.  They will be leaving a couple of weeks after we do.

Resources:

  • ICOM - the company we are using to host our website.

  • Travel Insurance Agency - London based insurance company that offers travel insurance backed by Lloyds of London.

  • IPASS - for those of you who are wondering how we are accessing the Internet from each country, check this one out.

  • RailEurope - everything you wanted to know about traveling in Europe including schedules and fares for point to point train travel.

  • Europe flight pass - fly between over 100 cities in Europe for just $90.  Can be cheaper than train travel between some cities

  • Travelweb - lists discount weekend hotels in many cities in the world.  We plan to periodically book a nice hotel to help keep our sanity.

  • ONSALE Auction - This is where I purchased my laptop, camcorder and digital camera.   Incredible deals can be found.  WARNING.....this website can be addicting and can contribute to loss of money on foolish purchases.

  • MapQuest - supplies door to door driving instructions between US addresses plus maps of dozens of US and foreign cities.

  • Travlang's Foreign Languages - provides basic terms and travel-related phrases for 70 languages including sound clips plus translation dictionaries and other very cool stuff.

  • U.S. State Department - entry requirements and the latest travel warnings such as "Don't go to Uganda or Yugoslavia"

Travel Magazines:

  • Zinezone.com - very cool site that contains features and links for trailblazers, risk takers, and other forms of travel related stuff.  Definitely check this one out.

  • Big World Magazine - great independent travelers magazine.

  • Timeout - world city guide to bars, clubs, hotels, museums, etc.

Other Cool Sites:

Travel Clothing/Supplies:

  • Campmor - this is where we purchased the majority of our clothing and other supplies.  Great discounts on Columbia, North Face, and other gear.

  • Travelsmith - specialists in travel clothing.

  • Magellan - travel specialists in supplies and phone adapters.
