How the dates work in the 41st Millennium
Okay. When a Space Marine and a Battle Sister get close, and decide they want to be more than friends and purgers of heretics, they decide to go on a "date". This can range from recitals of litanies to an "ice-cream social" (whatever that is...).
Now after several "dates"... Well, Inquisitor is suggested for "mature" players... [whistle innocently]

Seriously, though:

2588999/M41 (from the Armageddon web site, the part about the Flesh Tearers.).

The 2 is an identifier of origin. A 0 here indicates it originated on Terra, a 1 somewhere in the Solar System, a 2 by an Astropath in direct link with Terra and so on. An 8 means a rough estimate, 9 is historical data.

588 is the portion of year, expressed as 1/1000 of a year. 588 is roughly 14:40 on August 2nd.

999 is the year in the Millennium.

M41 is the Millennium.

Basically the report was filed at 14:40 August 2nd, 40,999 by an Astropath in direct communication with Terra.

(Note from Inquisitor Stephen Pearson) If you have a 3rd Edition WH40K Main Rulebook it can be found one page before the section in the back called "The Ultimate Secrets Of The Galaxy Revealed."
