Inquisitor Fides
Inquisitor Fides had been an orphan child on the hive world of Exspes, scratching what living she could on the harsh streets beneath the spires.  This all ended when, for some reason unknown to any but him, Inquisitor Vilkintz adopted her as his apprentice.  He had travelled to the hive in order to gather certain artefacts, although what these artefacts were is just as big a mystery.

Fides accompanied Vilkintz on his journeys around the Segmentum Solar, gathering other items from various worlds, but always leaving their previous owners dead.  Despite his brutality on these occasions, he always treated Fides herself with compassion, and she came to see him as a father.  She had never known her own.

The final destination of the inquisitor was the planet Purusum, where he was to conduct a ritual utilising all his gathered resources.  He would invoke the forces of Chaos, and channel them through himself, focusing the powers of the Warp on himself.  In so doing, he would become invigorated and arise, not as a man possessed by a daemon, but as a daemon himself.  The knowledge that this transcendance would grant him would be invaluable for the Ordo Malleus, he claimed.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending upon one's point of view), where he had believed that he had been operating in total secrecy over his years-long quest, in reality others were watching him.  A hardline puritan inquisitor had gleaned information pertaining to his objective through the Imperial Tarot, and had followed him on every step of his journey.  Inquisitor Lebreton, as he was known, decided to wait until the last moment, the last second before Vilkintz's apotheosis was complete, when his heresy was undeniable, and then denounce him, before executing him as a traitor.

Vilkintz prepared himself as the ancient tome instructed him, the book that he had inadvertantly stumbled upon in the Ordo Malleus forbidden Librarium, the text that had begun his fascination.  He anointed himself with the correct ungents, ingested the prescribed fauna, desecrated the ground upon which he stood in the designated fashion, and chanted the words that would allow him to ascend to a 'higher' level of existance.

Fides was his sole companion through these times.  Fides he trusted and cared for, perhaps through some other facet of the insanity that riddled him, perhaps for some final part of the ritual, or maybe even as the last vestige of humanity in the monster he was intent on becoming.  She cared for him too, the only person she had ever known to treat her with respect, to recognise her as a fellow human and not a piece of gutter scum.  So she stood watch over his vulnerable body while he entered a trance.  She knew full well what he was doing, and what he would become.  But he had promised her that  she would be safe, and after the ritual all the wrongs of the galaxy would be put right.  He had never lied to her before.

Vilkintz's rebirth began as he shed his outer skin to allow the scaled body of a daemon to crawl forth, spilling his innards into bowls crafted and set aside for that purpose.  When the eel-like daemon had devoured them, the process would be completed.  But Lebreton had been well aware of the ritual's details himself, and planned on not allowing that to happen.  He gave the word to attack to his force of Purusumian Arbitrators.

Fides was outnumbered dozens to one.  She would surely have been slaughtered had it not been for one of the unknown side effects of the spell.  As well as transmogrifying Vilkintz, the ritual breached a hole in reality just long enough for a number of minor daemons to crawl forth and attack the righteous.

Lebreton headed straight for the snake thing that had been Vilkintz, but Fides blocked his path.  Almost casually, he placed the blade of his knife through her right eye socket, and cast her aside.  His bolt pistol destroyed the unholy artefacts, and then he moved to kill the daemon, chanting praises to the Emperor the whole time, and informing Vilkintz of exactly why he was being executed.  Had he merely shot the beast through the head, he might have lived.  Instead, he was bitten clean in half.

The daemonic horde easily destroyed the arbites, but their time in the material world was severely limited, and it was not long before they returned to the Warp.  Only Fides was left alive, along with the daemonic Vilkintz.

While in all other respects Vilkintz had lost what little sanity he had had, he still would let no harm come to Fides.  The thing that he had become, so far from what he had expected, fed upon the flesh and departing souls of the dead rather than touch her.  Somehow, through a blessing of the Emperor or some more nefarious power, she managed to regain consciousness, and departed from Purusum with Vilkintz.

Once back in the arms of the Inquisition, with her injuries healed, she was granted inquisitorial rank.  By her words, Lebreton and her master had both died fighting each other, an object lesson to all those inquisitors who would make war against their compatriots.  She eagerly pledged herself to the Ordo Malleus, and the Thorian sub-division.

While other members of her inquisitorial cell praised her single minded devotion to their search for a means of giving the Emperor physical form, they did not know of her ulterior motive.  What information she unearthed, she did so with the intention of aiding her master, either completing the ritual by some means or reversing it and returning him to humanity.  All this time, she kept the daemon hidden from her compatriots by dint of the fact that it could alter its dimensions from monstrous proportions to a less conspicuous size at will.  She also invested in a hexagrammic ward to protect herself from those who would think to read her mind.

But when in the field, away from too many prying eyes, discretion goes out of the window.  Those who would stand in her way are gleefully dismembered and devoured by the daemon.  Should her path cross with another member of the Inquisition, this is no different.

Besides the fact that she can ill afford to have Vilkintz's survival to become known, she also bears an unabating hatred of the Inquisition itself.  In her mind, which is only marginally less mad than Vilkintz's had been, it was the organisation as a whole that had plotted against her master, and even now, behind her back, they whispered rumours and lies.

One day she will make them pay.  Make them ALL pay.
